A view into the historic city center of Dinkelsbühl (Germany). Dinkelsbühl was an Imperial City within the Holy Roman Empire, directly subject to the emperor and largely politically autonomous. It is one of the best‑preserved historic towns in southern Germany. Dinkelsbühl was spared major destruction during the Second World War, as the town was surrendered without a fight shortly before the end of the war in April 1945. As a result, its historic townscape has remained essentially intact.

The Würzburg Gate in Thüngersheim on the Main River was built in 1751. In earlier times, interregional traffic passed through the Würzburg Gate and the historic old center of Thüngersheim. Before today’s federal road B 27 — and the state road used before it — were routed outside the village core, the narrow main axis of the village served as the central traffic route for wagons, stagecoaches, and early automobile traffic. What a relief it was for the residents when the bypass was completed in 1980.

GAIA is a seven-metre-tall, highly detailed replica of our planet. To mark the State Garden Show in Ellwangen, the work by acclaimed British installation artist Luke Jerramin can be experienced at the Protestant Town Church in Ellwangen. GAIA transforms the nave into an atmospheric space that invites visitors to marvel, pause and reflect on the fragility and beauty of our planet. Through artistic means, GAIA draws attention to the most pressing questions of our time and thus has a direct connection to the overarching State Garden Show motto: “How do we want to live?”.
