British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78018 is in the Down Loop at Loughborough waiting with a mixed goods train for a path to Rothley.

Thorne South station where my father worked as a porter in the 1940s. British Railways Class 31 diesels 31105 & 31235 pass eastwards with a train of rails.

The photo was taken to highlight the Great Central Railway remains rather than the engines - rather obviously! All that was left of the Victorian station by 1974 were these rather delicate railings & gas lamp standard on the Down side & the partial wall on the Up platform. The truncated supports for the platform awnings can be seen on the Up side together with the fading Eastern Region blue "Thorne" running in sign. Later the whole lot was bulldozed and a new station built left of this spot which only ever had bus shelter waiting areas. The old MS&L stationmaster's house still stands however below and to the left of this view.

60532 stands ready at Kidderminster Town, Severn Valley Railway after a 22-year hiatus, since she last steamed at the North York Moors Railway.
Something of a surprise to me as the SVR wasn't operating service trains at the time.

What could be more welcoming than a warm coal fire on a cold December day? We had a mug of tea in the NAAFI under the road bridge at the GCR's Quorn & Woodhouse station and sat close to this crackling fire.

Meanwhile from time to time a steam engine would arrive with its train at the platform outside.

The atmospheric scene that greeted us when we arrived at GCR bridge 345, KInchley Lane to continue with the Up lineside clearance here. Cold but with the sun rising the mist is clearing and the frost will melt.

Great Western Railway 38xx 2-8-0 3850 heads towards Quorn on the southern edge of Loughborough with a train of empty 16 tonners.

The 94 milepost is the distance by rail from Manchester London Road station & not London, evidence of the GCR's roots as the MS&LR.

With Dave on the regulator, Great Central 9K/LNER O4 2-8-0 63601 drops down the 1 in 176 into Rothley station with a goods train during the January 2007 Gala.

Withdrawn from service in its 100th year in June 2012 63601 is currently being overhauled at Loughborough.

Great Central Railway O4 2-8-0 63601 gets up steam on shed at Loughborough in the early morning of the second day of the GCR's Winter Gala. I was taking a short break from prepping M7 30053 at the time.

63601 was withdrawn for overhaul later in June 2012 and currently the bottom end is in the shed at Loughborough and the boiler is on the ground in the yard both being worked on by the full-time shed staff.

The end of the Line! And what a line it used to be!

The Sheffield, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester Railway, later MSLR/GCR/LNER/BR, Woodhead Route opened through Hadfield in 1845 and was a major trans-Pennine transport link for nearly 140 years. Approved by the LNER pre-war the line was finally electrified by BR at 1500 vDC in 1955. It was the most modern railway in Britain at the time but was unfortunately the only main line using 1.5 kVDC and this system was soon superseded by the later network standard of 25 kV AC.

When the infrastructure needed upgrading the decision was made to close the line instead and all traffic between Hadfield and Penistone ceased in 1981. The Manchester commuter lines were eventually upgraded to 25 kV AC and trains still run to Hadfield & Glossop via Dinting Junction. Interestingly the original 70-year old overhead structures have been reused...

It may not be a steam train but it certainly produced plenty of smoke which lingered in the gloom of the tunnel for quite a long time!

This working out of Knaresborough is 2C24, the 10.29 Leeds to York service, and Northern Class 170 diesel multiple unit 170475 has just departed from the north end of the station through the tunnel.

British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 heads the 13.00 non-stop dining train through Quorn & Woodhouse station.

We were clearing the undergrowth alongside the Down Lie-by and I put my loppers down to grab this shot.

An ex-LNER 7-plank "general goods" waggon capable of carrying 12 tons. [Tare - 6-19-1 or 6ton 19cwt].
Waggon no 223162, built 1938.

Cosmetically restored and repainted in Bauxite / Red Oxide and lettered as "Highley Mining Company ltd" ...

A quick lunchtime visit to Rothley station. British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156, light engine, on a Driver Experience trip, is heading north, gently blowing off. Unnoticed by the platform staff.
