Opened on Monday 20 September 2021, I photographed Battersea Power Station station, one of London's two new Underground stations on Thursday of the same week. The evening light has much more to do with the appearance of this picture than the light editing I did.

The title comes from a work by the Futurist artist Umberto Boccioni, one of my favourite artists, whose ability to capture the essence of movement was unparalleled.

This is the escalator at Bank tube station (in The City) with the crowd rising from the bowels of the station, so the title seemed appropriate, as are the colours of the image.

Sadly Boccioni's life was cut short at 24yrs in WW1, I think had he lived he'd probably have gone on to be more widely known as one of the greats.

On a day when I did not see everything I had hoped to see, it was a joy to come across something quite unexpected. Locomotive L11 is part of a preservation project at Epping involving the locomotive itself and the signal cabin. The history of L11 makes interesting reading:

A Central Line train for North Acton at Epping. I thought it of note in a short visit that the frequency of service on a Saturday afternoon was impressive.

According to my notes from the time, London Underground operated a special train between Ealing Broadway and West Kensington on Sunday 6 June 1993 with Sarah Siddons at the London end and 0-6-0PT L99 at the country end. The latter is seen here at Turnnham Green.
