The common thick-headed fly (*Sicus ferrugineus*) belongs to the family Conopidae. It reaches a body length of 8 to 13 mm. Characteristic features include its reddish-brown body, pale yellow face, noticeably thickened frons, and the swollen abdomen that gives the fly its name. The adult flies are diurnal and feed primarily on nectar and pollen; they are frequently found on plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) and carrot (Apiaceae) families. As endoparasitoids, the females catch bumblebees in flight and use their ovipositor to deposit an egg between the bee's abdominal segments. The larva develops inside the bumblebee and overwinters there within the pupa, while the host dies :))
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the flies

Winged carpenter ants are not a distinct species of ant; rather, they are the reproductive individuals (virgin queens and males) of the carpenter ant (*Camponotus*), which is one of the largest ant species in Central Europe. Winged queens often reach a length of 16 to 20 mm. They possess two pairs of translucent wings—used exclusively for the nuptial flight—and range in color from deep black to reddish-brown. Typically, from late spring to early summer, hundreds of winged ants leave the nest simultaneously during warm, humid weather to mate in mid-air. The males die shortly after successful mating. The fertilized virgin queen actively sheds her wings (breaking them off at a pre-determined breaking point) and searches the ground for a suitable hiding place.
Pip1–4: Close-up shots of the ant

Why do winged aphids develop?
Overcrowding and lack of space: When a colony of wingless aphids becomes too large. When the host plant dries out or no longer provides sufficient nutrients. In late summer and autumn, to seek out winter hosts or initiate sexual reproduction.
They possess two pairs of transparent wings, allowing them to drift on the wind to colonize new plants. They are often slightly darker and more slender than their wingless counterparts, making them more aerodynamic. At the new location, winged aphids usually produce wingless offspring again in order to rapidly establish new colonies.
Pip1-6: Close-ups of the aphid

It has a distinctively constricted, stalk-like abdomen that strongly resembles that of solitary wasps. It is predominantly dark brown to black, with yellowish stripes and markings on the abdominal segments and head. It reaches a body length of approximately 9 to 14 mm. Its wasp-like appearance effectively protects it from predators; the species is parasitic. Females locate bumblebees or other bee species while in flight, intercept them in a dive, and lay an egg between their abdominal segments; the adult flies feed peacefully on nectar and are frequently found on flowers.
Pip1-5: Close-up shots of the insect.

The upper side of the wings is white with greyish-black wingtips. Females have two dark spots on the forewings, while males have only one. On the underside, the wings are pale yellow with a slight greenish dusting. With a wingspan of approximately 40 to 50 mm, it is significantly smaller than its relative, the Large White (*Pieris brassicae*). It can be found in gardens, meadows, and fields, as well as in parks and residential areas, from April to October, with two to three generations per year. It feeds on the nectar of a wide variety of flowers :))
Pics 1–4: Close-ups of the butterfly

The upper side of the wings is white with greyish-black wingtips. Females have two dark spots on the forewings, while males have only one. On the underside, the wings are pale yellow with a slight greenish dusting. With a wingspan of approximately 40 to 50 mm, it is significantly smaller than its relative, the Large White (*Pieris brassicae*). It can be found in gardens, meadows, and fields, as well as in parks and residential areas, from April to October, with two to three generations per year. It feeds on the nectar of a wide variety of flowers :))
Pics 1–4: Close-ups of the butterfly

Yesterday I showed the nymph of this bug; its coloration ranges from yellowish-orange and reddish-brown to a vibrant purple/violet. Characteristic features include the dark spots and stripes on the pronotum, as well as the black-and-yellow patterned margin of the abdomen! Adults reach a body length of approximately 11 to 14 mm. These bugs feed by sucking plant sap. They prefer umbellifers (such as carrots or hogweed), composites, and various crops :))
Pics 1–5: Close-ups of the bug

I believe this is the nymph in question because an adult *Carpocoris purpureipennis* (purple shield bug) was also present on the same flower; its body shape is broadly oval and slightly convex, with clearly visible wing pads—features characteristic of the late nymphal stage of shield bugs (Pentatomidae). The yellowish base color, combined with the distinct dark longitudinal stripes on the head and pronotum and the spots on the abdomen, matches the appearance of the fifth nymphal stage exactly. I uploaded the image to the AI and received this description!
Pip1–5: Close-ups of the nymph

Typical features include a slender body, striking yellow and black striped patterns on the thorax and abdomen, and—in the male—highly comb-like or fan-shaped antennae. Body length generally ranges from 12 to 20 mm, accompanied by a considerable span of long, fragile legs. Adult crane flies primarily consume water, dew drops, or occasionally nectar.

It measures approximately 25 to 30 millimeters; the forewings are grayish-brown to ochre, featuring two distinctive dark brown transverse bands. A key identifying feature is a dark brown triangular spot near the wing tip. The hindwings are often concealed when the moth is at rest but are clearly visible during flight, displaying a striking yellow-orange to brownish-yellow pattern. This gives the moth a surprisingly colorful appearance in flight. It typically produces two generations per year: the first from late April to June, and the second from July to August. Diet: The adult moths actively feed on nectar during the day, showing a preference for plants in the pea family (such as alfalfa or clover).
Pip1–4: Close-up images of the Butterfly

The body length is approximately 28 to 42 mm, and it is a bright green throughout, often with a fine brownish pattern on its back. The antennae are very long (often extending well beyond the abdomen), which clearly distinguishes it from grasshoppers. Females possess a long, slightly curved ovipositor at the end of their abdomen for laying eggs in the soil. It feeds predatorily on smaller insects such as aphids, caterpillars, and larvae. On warm summer and late summer afternoons and evenings, the males produce a loud, drawn-out chirp ("song") by rubbing their forewings together, which can be heard for many meters.
Pip1-4: Close-up photos of the grasshopper
