Pear Mill

Construction of the Pear Mill in Stockport commenced in 1908. The building is typical of the architects A.H. Stott & Sons, and was designed by The mill was designed by Abraham Stott junior. Financial problems led to changes in management of the mill company and it was finally completed in 1913 by Philip Sidney Stott.

At its peak, the mill employed approximately 300 people to run 52 pairs of spinning mules with a total of 137,312 spindles. This remained until the 1950s when the mill was electrified and replaced by 33,636 ring spindles. It ceased operation as a textile mill in March 1978. Today it is a listed structure and divided into business units.

The mill is so named because it was built on the land of Pear Tree Farm. The building includes a number of decorative pears on the structure and as a dome on the tower.

Cotton spinning mills at Heywood built for the Mutual Spinning Company. On the left is the No.2 Mill which has a foundation stone dated 1891 and at the right edge is the No.3 Mill, started in late 1914 but due to the war production did not start until 1922.

The completion of the No.3 Mill made the company the largest cotton spinning firm in the district with a total of 246,000 spindles. The mills continued in operation until relatively late, switching from cotton production during the mid-20th century to incorporating woollen and artificial fibre spinning.

The design of the mills was by local architects. Potts, Son and Pickup (No.2) and Potts and Henning (No.3). This is reflected in the similarities between the buildings.

Just visible at the left edge is the No.1 Mill, designed by Potts, Pickup and Dixon, on which construction began in 1884.

The former shaft rope changing engine ex Agecroft No 4 pit now resides at the Lancashire Mining Museum at Astley Green. It was always run on compressed air at Agecroft.

Bulleid pacific 34067 'Tangmere' heads the Great Britain XVIII tour up the Midland Railway Disley cutoff line on its way to Carlisle. The train is approaching the Hatherlow Lane footbridge in Hazel Grove. It was over sixty years ago that I used to spot trains from this bridge and it was a real bit of nostalgia to see steam again at this spot, even if it wasn't the ex LMS and LNER locomotives that we used to see. As kids we knew this location as 'Skelly Bridge'. There weren't any trees and it was double track back in the day.

This Commercial building in Altrincham, with offices over shops, was built in 1904-5, by Charles Heathcote & Sons, for J.H.Brown Esq. a developer who lived in Ashley. It incorporates a lot of buff terracotta ornamentation. Formerly known as Station Buildings this Grade II listed building was refurbished in 2014 to provide commercial accommodation and contemporary apartments.

This was built as a home trade and mail-order warehouse and newspaper printing office, 1908, for J.D.Williams & Co. Occupied in 1913 by J.D.Williams & Co and by Daily News Printing Office.

There is so much detail to see in this view of the lower rear facade. The brown faience around the paired doors and the Diocletian window above The keystones of the elliptical headed windows forming brackets to the three-light oriels. Then there is the stained glass, including Welsh dragons in the stairwindows.

The face on the other end at Dale Street features reddish brown and brown faience throughout.

It is listed Grade II.

The Houldsworth Arms in Reddish is a very large urban public house which was extensively remodelled between the wars. The facia is in cream terracotta with a semi-circular portico supported by (loosely) Doric columns.

Boathouse

This is one of the last remaining corrugated iron boathouses on the Macclesfield Canal. These structures were common from the small skiff type of the early 20th century to the ones that held cabin cruisers in later years. The last ones are to be seen on the High Lane Arm which is leased to the North Cheshire Cruising Club. They are disappearing because they are too small to accommodate the modern steel narrowboats that are in the majority today.

The River Mersey near to Sale Water Park, showing the footbridge leading to the Jacksons Boat Inn, just behind the trees to the right and, beyond that, the bridge carrying the Manchester Metrolink tramline to Manchester Airport.

I do like quirky details on buildings and this domed corner piece topped with a finial is a good example. The building itself, at the junction of High Street and Market Street, Altrincham, seems to have fallen on hard times.

Super Cinema

The Longford Super Cinema at Stretford opened on 12th October 1936. The art deco design was by architect Harry Elder. The 2,000 seat cinema closed in 1965 and was subsequently used as a bingo hall and club.It has been disused since 1995 and awaits a new use. It is listed Grade II.

Built in 1903-7 by the Broadstone Spinning Co Ltd for 260,000 mule spindles. The use of glazed brick ornamentation is typical of the period. When completed the double Broadstone Mill was the largest cotton spinning mill in the world. Half of the mill has been demolished since spinning ended in 1959 and the remaining section is listed Grade II and in multiple industrial and commercial occupation. Reddish, Stockport.

Storage tank at the Clayton facility of German owned speciality chemicals manufacturer Evonik. The company says that Evonik products make tires fuel-efficient, mattresses more elastic, medications more effective, and animal feeds healthier. Its website lists a large range of products including petrochemical antifoulant, gasoline octane enhancer and corrosion inhibitors.

The first electric tramway route by the Ashton-Under-Lyne Corporation began in 1902 between Ashton-under-Lyne and Hurst. A maintenance depot for the electric trams was created in 1902, on Mossley Road in Ashton-Under-Lyne for the repair and maintenance on the electric trams. This building was later repurposed for electric trolleybuses and then repurposed into business offices for present day use. The Corporation coat of arms is incorporated in a panel over the original office section of the depot.

Terracotta on the Town Hall Hotel in Eccles which was opened in 1904 by Holt's Brewery. This was built on the site of the local cock-fighting pits. The buddleia is not a good thing and is no doubt causing serious damage to the structure. The pub is long closed and planning permission was granted for conversion into flats. I doesn't appear that this has actually happened and the building remains derelict.
