Portland Head Light (Cape Elizabeth, Maine)—July 23, 2025

Portland Head Light was lit for the first time on January 10, 1791, with 16 whale-oil lamps in a 72-foot tower. Over the following century, the lighthouse underwent significant improvements, including new keeper residences, Fresnel lenses, a cast-iron staircase, and a 20-foot increase in tower height. Its history also includes the dramatic 1886 wreck of the Annie C. Maguire, whose passengers and crew were rescued with help from Keeper Joshua Strout, his family, and local volunteers. The present keeper’s quarters, built as a two-story duplex in 1891, housed lighthouse keepers and their families until 1989. The iconic lighthouse is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Carolles is a seaside resort on the Channel that has managed to preserve its natural surroundings and rich historical heritage. Its beach stretches for several kilometres of fine sand. The rows of white bathing huts are a reminder of the boom in sea bathing in the 19th century.

UN BANC IDÉALEMENT SITUÉ. Carolles est une station balnéaire de la Manche qui a su préserver un cadre naturel et un patrimoine historique riche. Sa plage s’étend sur plusieurs kilomètres de sable fin. Les alignements de cabines de bain blanches rappellent l’essor des bains de mer au XIXe siècle.

EINE IDEAL GELEGENE BANK. Carolles ist ein Badeort am Ärmelkanal, dem es gelungen ist, seine natürliche Umgebung und sein reiches historisches Erbe zu bewahren. Der Strand erstreckt sich über mehrere Kilometer feinen Sand. Die Reihen weisser Strandkabinen erinnern an den Aufschwung der Seebäder im 19. Jahrhundert.

Sazan Island, on the note, is a protected area. Nevertheless, it rose the idea of installing a luxury hotel and resort to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who liked the island and are willing to buy it, for discontent of Albanian people. The island is charming (there are some Google Street views), with remains of an old military base, it has some mediterranean trees, lots of brambles, many snakes (some venomous) and... some land mines. Its coast is beautiful.

The Castle Lighthouse is situated on the walls of the Venetian fortress of Agia Mavra on the Greek island of Lefkada. Actually, the base of the lighthouse is on one of the defense towers of the castle. The structure features a 9-meter-tall square tower, adjacent to a one-story stone keeper's house. The tower’s focal plane is 17 meters. The lighthouse was built in 1861 and powered with oil as a source of energy. In 1889 the old mechanisms were replaced with an automatic acetylene torch and in 1990 it became electrically operated.
