The Illawarra No.2 Tunnel site had an access issue on the day. The solution was for the four of us to carry the rack a Km or more down the access track to the site. Seen here having a spell halfway. Sometime in 1994.

A 425gm tuna tin lamp. The wick is a piece of egg carton and the fuel is the unused oil. The photo was taken just after lighting as I was surprised that it actually worked. It burnt for 2 hours before the oil ran out. August 2022.

A retired trampoline mat finds a new use. With the aid of stakes, cable ties and the back fence it becomes a shade for lettuce and rocket. The lettuce clearly tastes sweeter now and I think the rocket is better too. This shot shows the light in the middle of the day. I got the idea of using the mat as shade cloth from noticing that the lawn grew more quickly under the trampoline than in comparable other places. February 2019.

Further along the road on the same trip as the previous photo I found this couple failing to get a flat tyre changed. The wheel nuts were very tight. Even with the other guy and myself on my 4 way brace couldn't loosen them. I had a look around and after a while found this old farm gate which was made from pipe. After dragging it to the car we put the open end over the car's wheel spanner. The additional leverage loosened the nuts easily. The photo shows the wheel-changing happening. December 2017.

Our shower head needed replacing. My wife selected this one and installed it. Sadly though our low water pressure due to our location on a ridge the water dribbled rather than sprayed out.

Experiments with blocking holes with insulation tape suggested that blocking a quarter of the holes would correct the problem. I found the cap of our insect spray pressure pack was the size needed to block enough of the inner holes. Metal snips and a file soon had the flat top ready and silicone was used to glue it on.

It has been in place for a while now and is working well.

The module, mounted on the heatsink, is screwed to the side of the engine bay just to the rear of the coil. The original wires from the coil to the dizzy are shortened and attached to the module. The connections left to right are Coil-, Coil+, Sensor red, Sensor white. Colour-coded twin is run to the dizzy cable, in sleeving, The original dizzy cable, with connector cut off, is used to enter the dizzy. Correct polarity from the dizzy was determined by experimentation. The engine ran well one way and very poorly the other way.

The Champion ignition module is bolted to a piece of aluminum angle which enables mounting in the chosen location and acts as a heatsink. Toothed washers are used to lock nuts in place and also ensure earth connection to the heatsink is made for the module. White heat transfer compound is used between the module and heatsink. The LHS mounting screw is the module earth connection.

Shows the new wiring in the dizzy. The original lugs are retained on the pick-up wires. The original insulating clamp is used to connect to two std spade crimp lugs which have been drilled and filed to suit. The lugs are connected to short lengths of 4sq mm multi strand wire. The solder lugs are retained on the wires to the coil. These have been squashed into a suitable shape for use with the crimp joiner. Two eye lugs have had a small loop of single strand wire, with sleeving, crimped. These are fixed inside the dizzy using screws and nuts in the ignitor mounting holes. These provide blockage of the holes and cabletie anchor points to enable securing of the wiring.

I needed a longer VGA cable so I took two leads from old CRT monitors and worked out how they needed to be joined. I then soldered the wires insulating each joint with heatshrink sleeving. A larger diameter sleeve was put over the joints and then for additional protection was wrapped in a tape usually used for sealing antenna cable connections on radio towers. A loop was made and the same tape secured it to prevent straining the soldered joints. June 2017.

I wanted a 12V test lamp while working on a car so I combined an LED and a resister off a scrap cct board, an old ballpoint pen tube, an old faulty multimeter probe, plus a crocodile clip and some wire from the junk box. I then used some solder, glue and heatshrink sleeving to put it all together. The photo shows the test lamp connected to the 12V output of a power supply. I expect this will also be used in working on electronics on the bench. February 2017.

Separating the components required me to devise a restraining mount for the assembly while I knocked out a pin which held it all together.
I found that the high voltage coil had a leakage resistance to earth, that the ignitor module was faulty and observed that the tape protecting the windings on the pickup coil had mostly rotted away. All three were replaced and the motor worked again. September 2016.

The wire is threaded through the holes where the plastic line used to be. The other end is fixed in place then this end is tensioned and wrapped around the frame. December 2015.
