Stoneflies are primarily found in clean, oxygen-rich flowing waters. When at rest, their membranous wings lie flat and tightly folded on their backs. The stonefly's lifestyle is closely tied to water. While the adults live on land, the larvae (nymphs) spend their often multi-year development period entirely underwater. There, they preferentially cling to stones at the bottom of streams and rivers. Stonefly larvae are extremely sensitive to water pollution and low oxygen levels. Finding them in a stream is an excellent bioindicator of very high water quality. The lifespan of the adult, flying stonefly is very short, often lasting only a few days to a few weeks.
Pip 1-6: Close-up images of the stonefly

The wings are usually straw-yellow, beige, or light brown and often crisscrossed with fine, darker longitudinal stripes. This coloration provides perfect camouflage among dry blades of grass! The wingspan is approximately 30 to 38 mm. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day, they remain well camouflaged in the vegetation. They can be found in damp and dry meadows, along roadsides, pastures, and grassy meadows. They feed on nectar from flowers. :))
Pip1-5: Close-up photos of the moth

The wings are usually straw-yellow, beige, or light brown and often crisscrossed with fine, darker longitudinal stripes. This coloration provides perfect camouflage among dry blades of grass! The wingspan is approximately 30 to 38 mm. They are crepuscular and nocturnal. During the day, they remain well camouflaged in the vegetation. They can be found in damp and dry meadows, along roadsides, pastures, and grassy meadows. They feed on nectar from flowers. :))

In males, the hair-thin antennae can be up to four times as long as the entire body. In females, they are significantly shorter. The moth has metallic, bronze to golden-yellow forewings with dark longitudinal stripes and a striking, broad yellow crossband in the posterior third, which has dark edges. They are approximately 16–23 mm long. They are diurnal, especially active on sunny days from May to June/July. Courtship dance: Males often form swarms and perform conspicuous, hovering "dance flights" in the sunlight in front of bushes and treetops to attract females.
Pip1-4: Close-up photographs of the moth

Elles mesurent environ 16 à 23 mm de long.

The wings have a dark-white, finely dotted or marbled pattern. It has strikingly large, reddish compound eyes. The antennae stick out forward and resemble small horns – from which the hornfly family gets its name. The head and pronotum are light beige/brownish, the abdomen gray with a dark striped/spotted pattern; they are approximately 6 to 7 mm long. They can be found in damp meadows, forest edges, bushes, and habitats near water. The flies feed primarily on nectar, pollen, and plant sap.
Pip1-6: Close-up photos of the fly

The wings have a dark-white, finely dotted or marbled pattern. It has strikingly large, reddish compound eyes. The antennae stick out forward and resemble small horns – from which the hornfly family gets its name. The head and pronotum are light beige/brownish, the abdomen gray with a dark striped/spotted pattern; they are approximately 6 to 7 mm long. They can be found in damp meadows, forest edges, bushes, and habitats near water. The flies feed primarily on nectar, pollen, and plant sap.

In Slovakia, the linden (usually Tilia cordata, the small‑leaved lime) is not just a common tree, but a national emblem and an ancient Slavic symbol. It has been associated with peace, unity, love, and protection, and was venerated long before modern national awareness.

Historically, communities gathered under large linden trees for meetings, celebrations and even legal proceedings, and Slovak Romantic writers used the linden as a symbol of homeland and destiny. The tree’s heart‑shaped leaves and fragrant blossoms appear in Slovak art, literature and design as motifs of identity and endurance.

Practically, linden blossom is still used in herbal teas for calming and medicinal purposes, and its pollen contributes to distinctive local honey. In many towns and villages in Slovakia and neighbouring Czech lands, linden trees are planted near churches, in central squares, or along streets, becoming natural gathering points and living monuments of cultural heritage.

The botanic garden has a spectacular setting including a large rock garden built on the bunkers of an old fort. It has a collection of around 10.000 plant species.

The Botanic Gardens originate back to 1639, when the first botanical garden for medicinal purposes was founded in the city centre of Utrecht. In 1963 it came to the current location at Fort Hoofddijk, once part of the New Dutch Waterline. Pip1-5: Nahaufnahmen der Spinne

Wolf spiders don't build webs to catch insects. They stalk or ambush their prey and overpower it with a well-aimed leap. They have eight eyes in three rows. The two particularly large main eyes in the center give them excellent depth perception and night vision. The female spins a lens-shaped egg sac and attaches it to her spinnerets, so she carries it with her constantly. :))
Pip 1-5: Close-ups of the spider
