The last eruptions were in 1999 and 2000. Gunung Batur is an active volcano at the center of two concentric calderas northwest of Gunung Agung on the island of Bali. The southeastern side of the larger 10 x 13 km caldera contains a caldera lake, Lake Batur. Both the larger caldera and a smaller 7.5 km long caldera were formed by a collapse of the magma chamber, with the first major collapse occurring about 29,300 years ago and the second inner crater collapsing about 20,150 years ago.
My photo was taken during a trip in Wednesday 2013, when the entire volcano was, for once, not covered by cloud cover.

The caste system still operates in the background of Balinese life.
Brahmins are the highest caste in Bali. They still rank above the princely families and enjoy great prestige.
Only from this caste do the high priests emerge. From early childhood, these future “Pedandas” learn Sanskrit, deal with the traditional religious texts, philosophical writings and ancient wisdom books and are finally initiated into the secret esoteric teachings.
They know thousands of hymns, verses and magical formulas (mantras). Once ordained through extensive ceremonies, they live in complete devotion to the Supreme Divine Being.
These Brahmin priests only take part in major temple festivals and complicated rites that require special knowledge.
When they go into a trance during their ceremonies, the Supreme Holy Being speaks through them.
Accordingly, these pedandas are deeply revered and loved by the Balinese.

Phi Ta Khon is well known and loved by the Thai people because of its fun and quirky elements, but despite a long-standing tradition in Northeastern Thailand, no one can say for certain when or where it started.
The legend has it that “Phi Ta Khon” came from the word “Phi Tam Khon” (ghosts following people), a scene when the generous Vessantara and his wife Madri are leaving the forest for the city. To bid farewell to the couple, forest angels, ghosts and animals disguise as humans and blend in with the villagers to see them off.

Jökulsárlón is separated from the sea by only a short distance, and the combined action of the glacier, the river that empties from the lake, and the ocean may eventually transform it into an inlet of the sea. There are plans to prevent this from happening, since the only road in the area passes over the narrow isthmus.
