The ruins of the Cape St George lighthouse (now Heritage Listed). It seems that a number of errors led to it being built at the wrong place in 1860, with the result that ships continued to be wrecked on the nearby coast (23 during the operation of the light). It was replaced in 1899 by a new lighthouse at the entrance to Jervis Bay and was later demolished (being used as a Navy target) to prevent confusion with the new lighthouse in poor daytime weather. The PiP shows the coastline to the north and the distant entrance to Jervis Bay, where this should have been sited.

Some time ago, I posted an image (clickable PiP) of the Nella Dan hard against the rocky shore of Horseshoe Harbour at Mawson, maintaining her position with throttle at half power because her mooring cables had broken during a 200 kph blizzard. This is an image of her getting moving and being turned with the help of a boat, on 14 February 1966. In the foreground is the Mawson flagpole, flattened by the wind.

The Parque de la Memoria (Remembrance Park) is a memorial to the victims of the 1976–1983 military regime, known as the Dirty War in Argentina.

"The Dirty War ... is the name used by the military junta or civic-military dictatorship of Argentina ... for the period of state-sponsored violence in Argentina from 1974 to 1983. During this campaign, military and security forces and death squads in the form of the Argentine Anticommunist Alliance (AAA, or Triple A) hunted down any political dissidents and anyone believed to be associated with socialism, communism, left-wing Peronism, or the Montoneros movement.

It is estimated that between 22,000 and 30,000 people were killed or disappeared, many of whom were impossible to formally document; however, Argentine military intelligence at the time estimated that 22,000 people had been murdered or disappeared by 1978. The primary targets were communist guerrillas and sympathisers but also included students, militants, trade unionists, writers, journalists, artists and any citizens suspected of being left-wing activists who were thought to be a political or ideological threat to the junta." It features a wall with the names of the victims inscribed on it.

A week after a major rain event on the east coast of Australia (still causing flooding problems further north), this dust storm blew across from South Australia where a serious drought is occurring. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology notes "State of the Climate 2024 has indicated that there has been a shift towards drier conditions across southern Australia, especially for the cool season months from April to October."

The Sunday challenge: Your specialty. I enjoy photographing figure skaters. Unfortunately, these days, most competitions will not allow non-professional photographers to use cameras with detachable lenses. Although my Panasonic DC-FZ1000M2 was not meant for lower light, sports photography, it still manages to capture some good photos.
