From a Chinese toilet, at a remote truck stop in the middle of the Taklamakan Desert in China. It was snowing and -5° outside. Inside were supermarkets and food stalls to cater for the long distance travellers on these remote highways. It was busy. The approach to the toilets had painted murals of Silk Road history on its curving walls. An electronic board showed the number of male and female toilets and indicated how many were occupied, while abundant soap and warm water graced every hand basin. It was spotless. And free, of course, as are toilets in China, with attendant cleaners working all day long.
Bit of a change from donkey carts and long drop toilets in 2000!

The Christian Batak culture of Lake Toba is strikingly different from the rest of Sumatra. Stone furniture next to the steep roofs of ornate houses are characteristic of the architectural style of these people. Their houses are raised with the lowest level reserved as a pen for their animals.

A food court in Urumqi, capital of China’s Xinjiang province, where the original inhabitants are Uighur people of Turkic origin. All manner of delicious flatbreads are staples here, with char grilled meats and kebabs. I lived this happy ad in a food court!

In north-central Sumatra on the shores of Lake Toba is the town of Parapat where there was a transit center with a fascinating assortment of animal-drawn vehicles, bicycles and even an occasional car. I stopped here a lifetime ago to take a ferry to the island of Samosir frequented by international overland travelers.

This is a main road overpass in Xian, China. The overpasses serve 2 sets of users…pedestrians, and the thousands of electric motor bikes which use outermost lanes of the roadways. Here I am going down on a pedestrian escalator taking the photo of the e-bikes using the bike ramps opposite. The overpass itself is about 2 lanes wide, and pedestrians and bikes are able to safely cross the very wide and busy roads below. Very necessary to be able to cross at all!
I hope you have a wonderful Friday and weekend. I was not actually able to get online to Ipernity for most of the week…it would not load. Thus I did not visit much, sorry.
