Die J.R. Tolkien ist ein 42 Meter langer Gaffel-Topsegelschoner, der 1964 als Schlepper gebaut und 1994 zur luxuriösen Segelyacht umfunktioniert wurde. Benannt nach dem "Der Herr der Ringe"-Autor, hat das Schiff seinen Heimathafen in Amsterdam und befährt vor allem Nord- und Ostsee, oft auch bei Events wie dem Hamburger Hafengeburtstag.

Am Südost-Ende der Elbinsel Wilhelmsburg - an der Bunthäuser Spitze - steht dieser kleine hölzerne Leuchtturm mit Aussichtsplattform. Er ist über hundert Jahre alt und markierte die Fahrwasserteilung der Elbe, die hier ab Flußkilometer 609 für ca. 15 km als Süder- und Norderelbe getrennt bis zum Köhlbrand fließt. Das Leuchfeuer wurde 1977 gelöscht, nach einer Sanierung 1989 steht der Turm seit 2005 unter Denkmalschutz.

In far North Pakistan,crossing the Hunza River above Passu, and in front of the Passu Spires. Yes, I crossed it..over and back! Here is where the land begins to even out a little after the fledgling river drops from its high altitude beginning up near the China border on the Karakoram Highway. It flows down through the north here and combines with the Indus River as it curves in from Baltistan. These waters form the life blood of millions of people, providing drinking water, hydro power, and irrigation on their long journey to the Arabian Sea.

At Iguazu Falls…one of the most dramatic natural wonders I have seen. The walkways take you out and across the ferocious currents amid the deafening thunder of water. And, of course, the walkways shake and one is drenched with spray. The falls are some kilometers in width. This is one point at the top with the name, in English, of the Devil’s Mouth, where there is a vortex of water which spins and hurtles down…a frighteningly long way. It was high water season, and one could also see the remains of a previous walkway which must have been hurled over the edge by an extra aggressive water flow. We have backpacked round here twice ….. and have been on both the Argentine and Brazilian sides, and also came in bus and ferry from Paraguay.
I hope you have a safe weekend. The fires and heat in Europe are so distressing…

This photograph was taken in Guwahati, the capital of Assam, India, on an older iPhone. We were staying with our friends Manna and Yuveka. It had been raining all day, and when the rain eased a little we went out to see the town. Down by the banks of the Brahmaputra – a huge, majestic and muddy river – I took a few shots of the boatmen. I don’t know their stories, unfortunately; I can only guess that these are small transport or fishing canoes. If anyone knows more about life on the river here, I would be very glad to hear their experiences.

Taken during our 1993 cruise along the Thames River. We hired a boat and went from nearly Oxford down to Hampton Court.

It was a lovely spring. We were quite taken with this "castle" near Henley. We were initially told that it was owned by George Harrison(!) That is most definitely wrong. It is the Oakley Court Hotel, near Windsor (NOT Henley, either!)

In Behringersmühle setzt die Lok um auf die andere Seite des Zuges und nach 1ca. 15 Minuten Aufenthalt geht es zurück nach Ebermannstadt. Dabei folgt die Strecke fast die ganze Zeit der Wiesent, einem Nebenfuß der Regnitz.

Gesehen durch den Bogen der Richardstraßenbrücke.

In einem Hausboot zu wohnen ist für viele ein Traum, einige Wenige haben ihn verwirklicht - in einer ruhigen Ecke der Hansestadt zwischen Richard- und Wagnerstraße. Der Weg zu diesem besonderen Eigenheim war jedoch kompliziert, langwierig und ziemlich teuer. Allein für den Anschluss der Versorgungsleitungen waren damals (2007) 30.000 € fällig.
Von den 84 eingereichten Anträgen bzw. Entwürfen wählte die Stadt nur 10 aus, diese bekamen einen Pachtvertrag für 50 Jahre. Die Preise für die auf Topniveau gebauten Hausboote lagen bei ca. 1 Million Euro.
Das Schulgebäude (PiP 7) liegt gleich neben den Hausbooten. Es wurde 1928 durch den Hamburger Baudirektor Fritz Schumacher als Gewerbeschule geplant und errichtet.

Bingling Temple Grottoes, also called Binglingsi Grottoes or Bingling Thousand-Buddha Caves, is a 1600-year-old site on Yellow River with 183 caves and niches, 694 stone statues, 82 clay sculptures, and 900 square meters of murals. On June 22, 2014, Bingling Temple grottoes were successfully included in the world heritage list. This is the main approach, by boat, a 2 hour trip on the Yellow River.
