The wings are folded steeply upwards when at rest. The forewings are significantly larger than the tiny hindwings. Their body is characterized by very long, forward-stretched forelegs and two to three conspicuously long, thread-like tail appendages on the abdomen. As adults, their mouthparts are vestigial – they no longer feed. They spend most of their lives (often 1 to 3 years) as larvae in freshwater, where they feed on algae and plant matter. The winged insect often lives only a few hours to a few days.
Pip1-6: Close-up photos of the mayfly

It is about 8 to 10 mm long (significantly larger than the related meadow spittlebug). Its color is mottled gray-brown to greenish-brown. There are light, often whitish-yellow spots on the leading edge of the wings, bordered in dark. A distinct longitudinal keel runs across the head and pronotum. They feed on plant sap, which they collect from trees (such as alders, willows, or deciduous shrubs) and herbaceous plants, and are active from June to October.
Pip1-3: Close-up photos of the cicada

It reaches a length of approximately 7.7 to 9 millimeters. The reddish-yellow to orange base color of the body is striking. The base of the antennal bristle (arista) is dark – this visually distinguishes it from very similar species such as Psila merdaria. The eyes often have a darker, kidney-shaped marking. They seek out damp places, forest edges, bushes, damp meadows, and cultivated land with lush vegetation. The adult flies can be found from May to September and move rather sluggishly.

It belongs to the scorpionflies (Mecoptera) and, despite its imposing appearance, is completely harmless to humans. Males possess a raised copulatory organ on their abdomen that bears a striking resemblance to a scorpion's stinger, but it is neither venomous nor stinging. The head is elongated downwards, resembling a beak. The four transparent wings with dark, spotted patterns are typical. It feeds mainly on dead or weakened insects, occasionally also on flower nectar or fruit. Sometimes it even steals prey from spiderwebs. It can be found in damp, shady places such as forest edges and bushes. Males often offer females a "nuptial gift" in the form of food to increase their readiness to mate.
Pip1-4: Close-up photos of the insect

Although this insect can be very painful, I was particularly impressed by its beautiful eyes. Since it was lying on the leaf for quite a while, I was able to get as close as possible to this horsefly to get an even better look at its eyes and see how fascinating they are up close :))

I hadn't seen one in a long time, but these eyes immediately fascinated me. It was sitting on a leaf, and I was able to photograph it very closely at my leisure! You see them especially in summer near bodies of water, forests, and meadows. They grow to about 8 to 10 mm in length, with a slender body, gray-marbled wings, and strikingly iridescent compound eyes. Their behavior is extremely quiet, allowing for a virtually silent approach. They become particularly active before or during humid, rainy weather (hence the name). Only female horseflies suck the blood of mammals and humans, as they need the proteins for egg maturation. Males feed exclusively on nectar and plant sap. Horseflies are so-called "pool feeders." They cut the skin with their mouthparts instead of pricking it finely like mosquitoes, which is immediately noticeable and painful :))
Pip1-5: Close-up photos of the insect

The individual flowers only appear sporadically on my plants, directly next to the typical blue flowers. This happens regularly in nature through spontaneous genetic mutations or seed dispersal. Its flowers are white, often interwoven with very fine, slightly pink or violet veins. Identical to the blue form – bushy growth (60 to 80 cm tall) with deeply lobed, fresh green leaves. It blooms from June to August and prefers sunny to partially shaded locations in nutrient-rich, consistently moist meadows. Just like the blue variety, the white flower is an excellent source of nectar for bees and bumblebees :))

The larva has an elongated, slightly caterpillar-like body with three clearly visible pairs of legs at the front. Its color ranges from dark gray to blue-green with striking yellow-orange spots on its sides. The body is wrinkled and covered with small, bristly warts. It grows from approximately 1.5 mm after hatching to about 7 to 10 mm before pupation. The larva begins hunting shortly after hatching. A single larva consumes up to 400 to 500 aphids during its development period of about 2 to 3 weeks.
Pip1-4: Close-ups of the larva
