A slaty skimmer dragonfly (Libellula incesta) resting beside a lake. It is male as the female is golden brown with a black stripe. St, Bruno, Quebec.

Une libellule inceste (Libellula incesta) se reposant au bord d'un lac. Il s'agit d'un mâle, la femelle étant brun doré avec une rayure noire. Saint-Bruno, Québec.

Flower of the Allegheny monkeyface plant, Mimulus ringens, which grows in wet areas. This was in the woods at the mouth of a stream that flows into a small lake.

Flowers of the Shinleaf plant (Pyrola Elliptica), small flowers found in woodlands. They contain a chemical that is similar to aspirin, and, supposedly, applying the leaves to cuts and wounds reduces inflammation, hence their slightly odd name.

A young raccoon in winter searching for food. They sleep most of the winter, coming out only in the warmer spells to feed. Raccoons are usually nocturnal but feed by day in the winter to avoid the colder temperatures at night.

Eastern skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus), a plant of marshy woods. It is one of only a few plants that can generate its own heat allowing it to melt the surrounding snow and is the first to emerge through the snow in early Spring. The flowers are hidden inside the mottled reddish-brown spathe and are hard to see. As the name suggests, it smells bad, which attracts the early flies. Not beautiful, but a guarantee that Spring is coming.
