a collection of public radio devices, from tube receiver to transistor radios all the way to the vanishing point of classical radio machines, taking us to internet and satellite radio. So please post photos of the big wooden chunks with or without the "magic eye", of handy portables, kitchen radios, car stereos, ghetto blasters, receiver, alarm clocks, satellite- and internet-radios. The physical radio device seems to be a descending species - a good reason for this group, which is supposed to remember the old radio and to follow its evolution.

So today when, among the goodies my sister could not take to her new and smaller home, the smaller of these two radios needed a home, I offered it mine. And, besides, I had its big sister already.
Here they are alongside each other: both working well despite being 25 or thirty years old.

Corporation turned off the transmitter at CKZN, the shortwave station
that ran for seventy-odd years in my hometown of St. John's,
Newfoundland.

When they turned it off, we were all told it was for "testing." Of
course, they were not testing anything technical; they were testing
what the audience reaction would be. If there were enough outcry,
they'd turn it on. Otherwise, they'd leave it off. That's what they
have done.

They have not yet dismantled the antennas, which are next to a much
taller single mast for the local CBC medium-wave station. This
morning, I stopped by to take this picture of the shortwave antennas.
In Leonard Cohen's words, just "keeping some kind of record."

I developed the Tri-X film myself and badly spooled it -- thus the big undeveloped patch in the sky. But, as with so many mistakes, I think it adds something to the scene.

Some of my earliest notations were in late March 1978. This card was started a couple of weeks later, in early April that year. By the mid- or late 1980s I was so deeply involved in getting my M.A., I stopped keeping good records and, for several years, I hardly listened to shortwave radio at all. When I got back at it, in the 1990s, I had a computer, but never found a way to track what I was listening to as good as the old cards.

By the way, 1978 was before I got my first digital radio (which was an ICF6700W in 1979), and I used a particular method to remember where a station was. If you look closely you'll see "luw/" written here -- that stood for "lined up with" and it was always followed by some number on one of the bands of my "World Band Radio" plus an arrow indicating where on that number the tuning indicator was. Very
precise. :)

I am tempted to start doing this again. And I'd know pretty exact digital frequencies now.

By the way, "Numbers Stations" were -- still are! -- a way that countries' spy agencies keep in contact with their agents.

learn about the guts of radios, especially old ones. Now that I'm retired,

I have time to do that. So I bought a cheap, broken sixty-year-old radio,

and have started to figure it out. When I took this picture, I was

lubricating the volume control; I have lots more to do (including making

that volume control operate).

For other radio geeks, it's a four-tube Südfunk mw + two sw bands set.

Probably early 1950s.
