Spanish mission culture soon disrupted and undermined the Ohlone social structures and way of life. Under Father Serra's leadership, the Spanish Franciscans erected seven missions inside the Ohlone region and brought most of the Ohlone into these missions to live and work.  The Ohlone who went to live at the missions were called Mission Indians, and also neophytes. They were blended with other Native American ethnicities such as the Coast Miwok transported from the North Bay into the Mission San Francisco and Mission San José.&lt;br /&gt;

I feel an overwhelming urge to discover the secrets that lie in the abyss. As I write this account in my journal there is anticipation, and yes, the expectation that I may never again see the light of day. Let it be known that I have lived a full life before I take the plunge into the depths of darkness. With good fortune and provenance from above I may some day surface to tell the world of my discoveries.&lt;br /&gt;
With wavering courage and feelings of trepidation, I forge ahead.&lt;br /&gt;
