A whimsical house sign

Halfway up a hill near us is a house who's owner has a sense of fun. As well as a garden with a huge golden egg and brightly dressed scarecrows in the vegetable patch, he has made a creative sign for his house name.

As you walk towards the house, the random jumble of letters arrange themselves to read "Oakwood House" if you stand in the right place.

When you notice this stone in the wall at Prästgatan and Kåkbrinken, you are looking at something older than Stockholm itself. This Viking Age rune stone, dating from the late eleventh century, still preserves its serpent motif and fragments of runic text. It was not carved for this house, but was probably moved here from its original location and built into the wall during the medieval period, reused simply as a convenient block of stone. Its presence here shows how a memorial from the Viking Age could lose its original purpose and become part of the fabric of the growing town.

Valentine's Day. We had a light lunch at Sorrentos, and then strolled through the other street Cafés. This sign appealed :-)

The Troodos Mountains are the largest mountain range in Cyprus and are located roughly in the center of the island. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus at 1,952 meters, where skiing is possible in winter.

The region has been known since antiquity for its mines, which for centuries supplied the entire Mediterranean with copper. During the Byzantine period, it developed into a center of Byzantine art, as churches and monasteries were built in the mountains, far from the ever-threatened coast.

Only in very remote mountain areas has the old pagan custom of throwing Christmas trees survived.

Nonsense, this sign warns of falling trees.

We hit a small issue on out Friday 13th "Old guys" walk to Stroud - a fallen tree blocking the way.

We were able to crawl under it, but if we were in a car, I'm not sure that driving slowly would have helped! Perhaps they'd run out of "Road Closed" signs :-)
