The Shippams business closed down many years ago, and the old factory building was converted into residences and shops, though the clock and sign remain part of Chichester's streetscape.

HWW - I spotted the remains of an old sign in Gloucester. I believe it is advertising Talbot & Co.

Founded in 1845 by Thomas Talbot, this firm operated out of premises on Ladybellegate Street and Commercial Road (partially occupying the former Blackfriars Monastery site). While they started with mineral waters and ginger beer, they expanded by the turn of the 20th century to wholesale beer and cider bottling—notably for major names like Bass and Worthington.

Whilst sitting on a bus in Chester I espied this sign through the window whilst we waited at the traffic lights.

This building dates from 1880 and was owned by a company that operated four such establishments at one time. It was a part of the temperance movement offering an alternative to pubs. As with most temperance businesses it closed in the first half of the twentieth century, In an ironic twist the premises now house a bar.

Überall im Zentrum von Hitzacker sieht man solche Markierungen, die zeigen, wie hoch das letzte oder vorletzte oder vorvorletzte Hochwasser hier stand. Jedes Haus hat hier Schäden erlitten.

In 2026 herrscht aber wieder mal das andere Extrem : Niedrigwasser. So tief, dass keine Schiffe mehr fahren können, nicht mal die kleine Fähre für Radl und Fußgänger.

Man kann sagen : Hitzacker ist ein Hotspot der Klimakrise, die durch häufigere Extreme gekennzeichnet ist. Die Leute hier haben die Gefahr schon begriffen. Dementsprechend ist die Stimmung vor der Kommunalwahl. Plakate der notorischen Klimaleugner muss man hier nicht ertragen, die machen keinen Stich hier.

Interessant auch die Berechnung der Kosten : die notdürftige Bewältigung der Klimakrise kostet volkswirtschaftlich gesehen deutlich mehr als ein vernünftiges Gegensteuern kosten würde.

Halfway up a hill near us is a house who's owner has a sense of fun. As well as a garden with a huge golden egg and brightly dressed scarecrows in the vegetable patch, he has made a creative sign for his house name.

As you walk towards the house, the random jumble of letters arrange themselves to read "Oakwood House" if you stand in the right place.

When you notice this stone in the wall at Prästgatan and Kåkbrinken, you are looking at something older than Stockholm itself. This Viking Age rune stone, dating from the late eleventh century, still preserves its serpent motif and fragments of runic text. It was not carved for this house, but was probably moved here from its original location and built into the wall during the medieval period, reused simply as a convenient block of stone. Its presence here shows how a memorial from the Viking Age could lose its original purpose and become part of the fabric of the growing town.

My diet is quite balanced.
