Ces jours derniers j'ai découvert une petite ancolie ressucitée dans un miniscule pot de fleur un peu planqué dans le jardin. Il fallait que je l'immortalise. Ce matin, très décidée, je fais mon installation (fond, trépied, placement du pot de fleur). Au moment de presser la télécommande, pfffffttttttt, une petite brise et ...... envolée la fleur de la semaine. Voilà le résultat.

After two days of travel we finally arrive at our destination just on the outskirts of Mallaig. Our big cottage window and garden looks out onto this scene which I took within hours of getting here. This boat turned out to be a regular visitor here as it heads towards Mallaig, only a short distance away.

The Wildrijk is one of the smallest (800 x 240 meters) forests in the Netherlands. Yet this nature reserve is one of the most beautiful spots of the province of North Holland, especially in spring. During that time of the year it is surrounded by colourful bulb fields. The forest itself is covered with a blue carpet of thousands and thousands of wild bluebells, with some pink or white species. The flowers alternate with the fresh green of ferns.

The Wildrijk is located in the Zijperpolder, where in the past wealthy merchants from Amsterdam owned wooded country estates. Later, during the construction of the Noordhollandsch Kanaal, a lot of forest was cut down. In 1940 the area came into the possession of Landschap Noord-Holland, a Dutch foundation which aims to protect the landscape and nature of the province of North Holland.

Once one has travelled on ‘The Road to the Isles” fyom Fort William to Mallaig, it is never forgotten here we are just a few miles south east of Arisaig and some 25miles west of Fort Wlliam. This is a sea-loch, part of the Atlantic Ocean and this viaduct carries the single West Highland Railway line from Fort William to Mallaig.

The very wide panoramic scene displays the area as a whole, best see via previous photo.

The Noordoostpolder is a landmass of reclaimed land in the former Zuiderzee on average more than four meters below sea level. It turned out that the bottom of this sea is very suited for the cultivation of tulips. Nowadays it has one of the largest area of bulb fields in the Netherlands with many multi-acre fields of tulips that bloom every spring.

Having passed Fort William we come across a grand view of Britain’s highest mountain. We are about half way up Loch Eil here from Fort William and this single-line track is part of the West Highland Railway line that runs from Oban to Mallaig. (Technically it runs from Glasgow to Mallaig via a detour to Oban, a total distance of 205miles )
It would have been nice to see one of the occasional steam trains that runs along here on its way to Mallaig via the Glenfinnan Viaduct but we were still a couple of weeks early for that. PiP
