Not quite a proper fence but we can see the barbed wire of the fence here above the left wall. This is very near a spot where we used to take our mobile home for the weekend. A most wonderful tranquil spot with a medieval butter cross in the middle of the hamlet. As you can see, public footpaths abound.

King Sterndale is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, England. It is located in the Peak District, 4 miles east of Buxton. It has a population of about 30, increasing to 133 at the 2011 Census.

This plant caught my eye on a canal-side walk. Growing out of a crack in the brickwork of a bridge, the tendril had grown, putting out regularly spaced leaves, until it touched the water.

HFF - a shot from last month where we spent an enjoyable day watching Gloucestershire play (badly) against neighbouring county Worcestershire at the Cheltenham Cricket Festival.

The festival is held in the grounds of Cheltenham College, and is the oldest continuously held cricket festival in the world, running annually since 1872.

Even after some nice late summer rain, the fields are brown and very dry. Flattening them for next planting is slow and heavy going.

HBM! The bench (it's there, just below the white house) is at the bottom of Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire. The image doesn't do the steepness of the slope justice, but this is the hill that brave and foolhardy folk throw themselves down in pursuit of a wheel of cheese at the end of every May. The PiP is a view of this year's event, from a very safe distance!

In diesem Sommer sah ich ziemlich häufig den Kleinen Feuerfalter (Lycaena phlaeas). Hier im Bild an einem Blütenstand vom wilden Majoran (Origano vulgare) Nektar saugend. Das Männchen verteidigt sein Territorium gegen andere Männchen und verjagt auch deutlich größere Falter wie zum Beispiel das Tagpfauenauge. Diese Falterart kommt in Deutschland noch relativ häufig vor.

This summer I saw the Small Copper (Lycaena phlaeas) quite often. In the photo it is nectaring on an inflorescence of wild marjoram (Origanum vulgare). The male defends its territory against other males and even chases away much larger butterflies, such as the Peacock butterfly. This species is still relatively common in Germany.
