The Highland Clearances were a series of forced evictions of tenant families from the Scottish Highlands and Islands, primarily between about 1750 and 1860, Landlords (often Scottish clan chiefs or their successors) removed people from their traditional smallholdings to make way for more profitable land uses, especially large-scale sheep farming.

Historians commonly cite around 70,000–150,000 people displaced over the period, with many emigrating to Canada, the US, Australia, or New Zealand.

Le Geranium maderense est une bien curieuse espèce botanique originaire, comme son nom le laisse présager, de l'île de Madère. Il s'agit d'une plante vivace de courte vie mais tout à fait spectaculaire : couverte de grandes feuilles brillantes et très découpées, elle se stabilise en appuyant les pétioles de ses feuilles sur le sol tandis qu'apparaît au printemps sa floraison massive d'un joli rose frais, disposée en larges bouquets culminant à plus de 1 m du sol. C'est une plante très ornementale mais frileuse, dont on réservera la culture en pleine terre à nos régions les plus clémentes. Les jardiniers plus continentaux l'installeront dans un grand pot sur la terrasse à la belle saison et l'abriteront du gel en hiver.
Il s'agit d'une plante monocarpique, c'est-à-dire qui ne vivra que pour fleurir une unique fois avant de mourir : parfois considéré comme bisannuel, le géranium de Madère peut en réalité vivre pendant 3 ou 4 ans avant de fleurir pour assurer sa pérennité en produisant de nombreuses graines. A maturité et en fleurs, la plante pourra dépasser 1 m de hauteur pour 80 cm de largeur. Elle forme un tronc qui s'élève peu à peu au fur et à mesure de l'apparition du feuillage, ample, lustré et superbement découpé. Les feuilles retombantes sont d'un vert vif, et portées par des pétioles rouge foncé, dont la plante se sert pour s'appuyer sur le sol. De février à juin, selon le climat
