Miguel de Cervantes hat mit seinem Roman um Don Quijote die Mühlen bei Campo de Cristana berühmt gemacht. Ich achten Kapitel des Buches zog der idealistische Ritter in den Kampf gegen die Mühlen, im Glauben feindliche Riesen zu besiegen müssen. Schwer verletzt muss Don Quijote aufgeben. Natürlich darf da eine Skulptur von ihm an den Mühlen nicht fehlen.

Einer der Flügel der Windmühlen bei Campo de Cristana wirft seinen langen Schatten auf den Boden. Wenn die Mühlen arbeiten sollten, wurde die Flügel mit Stoffen gespannt und das Dach in den richtigen Wind gedreht. Dabei musste der Müller darauf achten, dass das Windrad sich nicht zu schnell drehte. Optimal sind so 35-40 km/h. Drehen die Flügel zu schnell, kann die ganze Mühle ins Vibrieren kommen und beschädigt werden.

D’Orangemolen (d'Orange Mill) is a round brick smock mill. The flour mill was commissioned in 1734 by the Prince of Orange. The mill was leased to the miller who offered the most. It was called the ‘compulsive mill’, because all local farmers were obliged to use d'Orangemolen for grinding their grain.

During the liberation in 1945 after World War II, the mill was damaged and subsequently restored several times. Nowadays the mill - with a white plastered rain side - is privately owned, but is still fully operational.

The Ostmühle (East Mill) on the Mühlenberg (100 meter above sea level) in Gildehaus is a Dutch-style tower mill. The mill was built in 1749/1750 from Bentheim sandstone and has a long and turbulent history. Three year before a violent storm destroyed a wooden mill on the same spot. The mill was privately owned from 1913 to 1986. It was in danger of being demolished several times.

After a restoration the mill has been in operation again. Today, it is preserved as a historical monument and is open to the public on certain days, allowing visitors to see its historic milling equipment.

Watermolen Singraven (Singraven watermill) has been part of Landgoed Singraven since 1448. The mill consists of an oil mill (no longer in operation and partly demolished, nowadays housing a restaurant), a corn mill and a saw mill. The corn mill and saw mill are still in operation and can be visited. The mill is run - mostly on Saturdays during summer time - by volunteer millers.

Watermolen Singraven is the last water-driven undershot sawmill in the Netherlands. Its water supply comes from the small river Dinkel, which rises in the town of Holtwyck in Nordrein Westfalen (Germany).

The mill has three water wheels, each with a diameter of 5.5 metres. The left wheel against the restaurant is from the former oil mill. The oil mill was demolished in the early 20th century, so the wheel is the only remaining part. The middle wheel is from the corn mill and the right wheel from the sawmill.

Un moulin en activité depuis le XVIIIe siècle
Érigé en 1744, le Moulin à Vent du Cotentin est une véritable prouesse d’ingénierie : sa toiture pivote à 360° pour capter au mieux le vent. Après plus d’un siècle d’activité, il a dû s’incliner face aux minoteries modernes en 1848… Mais son histoire ne s’est pas arrêtée là !
Restauré avec passion en 1997, il a retrouvé son souffle et fait revivre un savoir-faire ancestral, grâce aux soutiens financiers du Conseil Général de la Manche, Créavenir, Agralco et de la Communauté de Communes de Portbail.

Aujourd’hui, géré par l’agglomération du Cotentin, c’est l’un des derniers moulins à vent en fonctionnement, produisant une authentique farine de meule de blé, de sarrasin et d’épeautre.
Accompagnés du meunier ou de la meunière, vous explorerez les trois niveaux de travail du moulin et assisterez à chaque étape du processus de fabrication.

Fougères est une commune française sous-préfecture d'Ille-et-Vilaine, en région Bretagne. Fougères compte 20 307 habitants en 2023, faisant d'elle la troisième commune d'Ille-et-Vilaine après Rennes, la capitale régionale, et Saint-Malo.

C’est un imposant édifice médiéval, ses 13 tours en font la plus grande forteresse d’Europe aussi bien conservée. Elle détient même le surnom de Carcassonne de l’ouest. Dès le moyen âge, le château est construit dans la zone frontalière des » Marches de Bretagne « , pour surveiller leurs voisins et empêcher leurs invasions. C’est au 15 ème siècle en 1488 que le Bretagne encaisse une défaite contre la France, c’est la fin de l’indépendance bretonne. Durant 10 siècles, il est au centre de l’histoire commune du Royaume de France et de la Bretagne.

Fougères est vraiment un incontournable des châteaux médiévaux.

In the past, there were as many as 25 industrial mills in Weesp, which was a prosperous industrial town for centuries. Three mills remain. Two of them, De Eendragt and De Vriendschap, are located together on the banks of the river Vecht.

In the 17th century, De Eendragt (left) was a malt mill used to break grain for the brandy distillers, an important industry in Weesp. After this, it became a mill grinding shells into fine powder and in 1815 it became a wood sawmill. When this function ceased in 1932, the mill fell into disrepair. After a restoration in the 1970s, the mill is working again.

Traditional flour mill De Vriendschap (right) was built here in 1900, on the site of a 17th-century corn mill that was burned down. Nowadays the mill grinds a couple of times a week, when there is sufficient wind. The flour is for sale in the mill shop.
