Sutton Weaver swing bridge on the Weaver Navigation carries the A56 over the river. It was completed in 1926 and has seen much repair and refurbishment in recent years.

Tower Road rolling lift bridge carries the busy A554, linking Birkenhead with Wallasey on the Wirral. It forms the main route into the docks and the nearby ferry terminal. The new bridge replaced an ageing Scherzer rolling bridge built in 1933. The 33.7m moving span is lifted by two hydraulic cylinders which are assisted by a 482 tonne counterweight system. It was opened in 2018.

Side bridge on the Stockport Branch Canal at Gorton. Maintenance of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company's boats was undertaken at Gorton dock which was located on the Stockport Branch of the Ashton Canal a short distance from the junction with the main line. This is the bridge that carried the towpath across the entrance to the dock. It is dated 1864.

Scherzer bridge

The Drypool bridge over the River Hull is a Scherzer lifting bridge and was designed by W. Morris, the Hull City Engineer. It was fabricated in Hull, being completed in March 1961. In the background the Shotwell building is a shot tower, making lead shot for shotgun cartridges. The building just creeping into the frame on the right the Clarence Flour Mill which was a rebuild in 1952 of a blitzed structure. Sadly it was being demolished at the time I took this photograph.

Built of sandstone, this stone arch bridge connects Salford to Manchester across the River Irwell. It was erected in 1820 to replaced an earlier wooden footbridge, built in 1761 and removed in 1817. The new design, by Thomas Wright of Salford, was completed in June 1820, and opened on 1 August that year. Tolls for use of the bridge were abolished in 1848. It is listed Grade II.

Weymouth Town Bridge is a lifting bascule bridge connecting the formerly separate boroughs of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis. When lifted it allows boats access to the inner backwater of Weymouth Harbour, known as Weymouth Marina. It was opened in 1930 and, is the sixth to have been built across the harbour since 1597. Today the hydraulically-operated bridge is raised every two hours, 363 days of the year. It is listed Grade II.
