The Kinloch River, Rum

A walk up to and over the Kinloch river here on the Island of Rum with the peak of Hallival showing its dominance. We have hiked much higher upstream (on our left) but beyond this bridge we will shortly come back to the road and our route continues downstream. This photo with the trees belies the fact that the island is largely devoid of them.

Not quite a proper fence but we can see the barbed wire of the fence here above the left wall. This is very near a spot where we used to take our mobile home for the weekend. A most wonderful tranquil spot with a medieval butter cross in the middle of the hamlet. As you can see, public footpaths abound.

King Sterndale is a village and civil parish in Derbyshire, England. It is located in the Peak District, 4 miles east of Buxton. It has a population of about 30, increasing to 133 at the 2011 Census.

Taken at Langstone Harbour, Hampshire last Sunday, between rain showers.

Viewed large, you can get an idea of how many Egrets were hanging around, even though they're not in focus. Too far away for my lens unfortunately. This was taken on my phone as I didn't have a wide angle lens with me.

Taken on-board the ‘Western Isles’ Ferry off the Knoydart Peninsular looking east near the village of Inverie directly towards the striking, sharply conical Munro Sgùrr na Cìche rising 1,040 metres (3,413 feet) in this remote Knoydart region known as the "Rough Bounds" of the Northwest Highlands of Scotland. You can just see Inverie on the left side along with its pier, further left at full screen. The big peak on our left is Sgùrr Coire Choinnichean at 496 metres (2611ft)

A promise of a few hours of dry weather sent me roaming onto my local hillsides. This is an old beacon tower which I have photographed many times but not quite from this spot. This exact spot is a place where I used to explore with my young brothers when I was a kid walking up a big hill to get here.

“During the Roman occupation of Britain, a warning beacon for local garrisons, possibly lit during times of unrest, may have been sited on Hartshead Pike. The name refers to the hill and the tower. The tower is not on the highest part of the hill but its prominent position, 940 feet (290 m) above sea level, has been the site of a beacon or signalling station from early times, or at least from the 16th century.” WiKi

Another experiment with the new-to-me Lumix FZ1000/2. Disappointingly not as sharp as my bigger sensor+ professional lens Nikon D7500. This is in fact a hand-held 5-shot HDR scene to bring out the character of the clouds that I was seeing, so not helping with the definition of course! As an old friend often quoted me “You cannot make a silk purse out of a sows ear”. Ah well, a rather nice photo all the same, I think, and hopefully you do too. The Bridge camera to its credit has a lot of nice features and for me the weight and size + long lens range outweighs most of its downsides.

Coopers Hill from the top

HBM! The bench (it's there, just below the white house) is at the bottom of Coopers Hill in Gloucestershire. The image doesn't do the steepness of the slope justice, but this is the hill that brave and foolhardy folk throw themselves down in pursuit of a wheel of cheese at the end of every May. The PiP is a view of this year's event, from a very safe distance!

Clachaig Inn

A slightly misty autumnal view of Signal Rock as a backdrop to the Clachaig inn, a warm and welcoming pub especially on a cold Glen Coe day in an image from 2013, deserted benches and HBM!

When my editing software failed I took the opportunity to reload and re-edit all of my images so older stuff like this will appear from time to time, But I am actually enjoying the process!

Very few walks are as emotive as the short loop visiting Signal Rock in Glen Coe. This gnarled boulder is now surrounded by forest but is said to have been the place (though there is some doubt) where government forces commanded by Robert Campbell of Glenlyon gave the order to attack the local MacDonald clan. Contrast this sobering event with the feeling of elation when the wonderful sight of the Clachaig Gully and the end of the Aonach Eagach ridge is revealed from An Torr. The circuit is a quick one – rare for this fine glen, where many of the best spots involve more serious hikes – but conceals a handful of surprisingly steep sections; refuelling may therefore be required at the famous climbers’ haunt of the Clachaig Inn near the finish.

This is part of the Dove Stones chain near my home town of Oldham. Yeoman Hey Reservoir is most often full to the wall here and has mirror reflections in the right conditions. Today it is possibly lower in water than I have ever seen after a summer of dry heat. Rumour has it that next year may be worse! Our path lies along the left side today, way past the far end of this scene up the valley towards Greenfield reservoir which was also very low.
The PiP shows a winter view of this reservoir with the normal level of water.
