Salar de Surire is ringed by volcanoes and lies at 4250m in the far north of Chile, just across the border from Bolivia. It is home (among others) to all 3 Chilean species of flamingo, to vicuña, viscacha, ñandú (suri) and puma. The western part of the salar is used for Lithium mining.

At Aldeyarfoss river Skjálfandafljót drops 20m over the basalt colums of Suðurárhraun lava field.

The waterfall can be reached via road 842 (turnoff from the ring road near Goðafoss) through Barðardalur. At the end of the valley the road turns into mountain road F26, Sprengisandsleið, one of the great highland crossings. Aldeyarfoss is 5 km along F26.

On F910 (Austurleið) at the turn-off to F902. The mountain in the background of the volcanic wasteland is Askja volcano.

F in a road name means Fjall (mountain), these tracks are only suitable for large 4x4 (no Dacia Dusters!), they are not surfaced, have river crossings and can be quite challenging. They are open only in summer (late June/ July - September/ early October depending on the weather).

Police and rangers are patrolling the highlands to help if someone runs into trouble and to make sure nobody does any offroad driving which is strictly forbidden.

Fines can be up to 1 million krona (not quite 7000 Euros) which many Icelanders think is much too low. A recent case of vandalism caused quite a stir:

A few of the hundreds of fumaroles, hot springs, geysers etc. in El Tatio Geyser Field. It is the 3rd largest (after Yellowstone and Kamchatka) and together with neighbouring Sol de Mañana (Bolivia) the highest in the world.

Conguillío National Park is in the Andes, in the provinces of Cautín and Malleco, in the Araucanía Region of Chile also known as Region IX. Its name derives from the Mapuche word for "water with Araucaria seeds".

Among the attractions in the park are the Llaima volcano, Sierra Nevada and wild landscapes characterized by islands of vegetation completely surrounded by vast areas of lava flows and is a humid and wet area.

There are also extensive forests, formed mainly by Araucarias and Nothofagus species, and small lakes within the park.

It is also known as Los Paraguas (The Umbrellas), due to the shape of the Monkey Puzzle trees.

Der Nationalpark Conguillío (span. Parque Nacional Conguillío ) liegt in Chile in der Region IX, der Región de la Araucanía. Der 60.833 ha große Nationalpark liegt etwa 80 km östlich von Temuco in den Anden. Höchster Punkt ist der aktive Vulkan Llaima mit zurzeit etwa 3145 Metern, der zuletzt im Januar 2008 ausbrach. Bei diesem Ausbruch wuchs er von seiner vorherigen Höhe von 3125 Metern, die auf Karten erscheint, zur jetzigen Höhe. Es gibt mehrere Gebirgsseen, von denen der Lago Conguillío und die Laguna Verde die größten sind. Die kleine Laguna Arco Iris existiert erst seit 1994, als bei einem Ausbruch des Vulkans ein Lavadamm entstand und den See aufstaute. Hverfjall is a tuff ring near Lake Mývatn that was created ca. 2500 years ago in a massive phreatomagmatic eruption (hot magma reacting with groundwater). It is part of the Krafla volcanic system.

On the left in the PiP and just SE of Hverfjall is another tuff ring, 6600 years old Lúdent.. The big mountain in the background is Búrfjell, a 959m high tuya (table mountain created by volcanic eruptions under a glacier)

Das Hochtemperaturgebiet Hverir (auch Hverarönd oder Námaskarð genannt) liegt am Fuß des Námafjall und ist Teil des Krafla- Vulkansystems. Dass die Gegend vuilkanisch sehr aktiv ist, hört und riecht man eindeutig;-)

Direkt östlich des Anden-Hauptkamms und nahe der Grenze zu Chile liegt die bolivianische Salvador-Dalí-Wüste auf ca. 4500m Höhe. Die bizarren Felsformationen, die durch Wind-Erosion entstanden sind, bestehen aus Ignimbrit, wie auch die ganze Landschaft vulkanisch geprägt ist. DIe Dalí-Wüste ist Teil des Eduardo-Avaroa-Nationalparks.

Skarðsheiði and neighbouring Hafnarfjall are the remains of an extinct, 4-5 million years old late pliocene central volcano south of Borgarfjörður.
The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.

After the Kreppá bridge F910 meanders through Krepputunga before doubling back to cross Jökulsá a Fjöllum. Móberg ridge Herðubreiðartögl and table volcano Herðubreið can be seen in the background, the foreground is filled with lava and pumice from Askja eruptions.

En estos últimos tiempos, la vida me ha llevado por caminos inesperados. Entre el cuidado de mi compañera, que se recupera de una operación complicada, y el día a día con Abby, que también necesita mi atención, el tiempo parece escaparse entre las tareas del hogar y las responsabilidades que no pueden esperar.

La fotografía, que siempre ha sido mi refugio, ha tenido que tomar un segundo plano. No es falta de ganas, sino de minutos. A veces, cuando logro robar un instante, miro las publicaciones de otros en Ipernity y siento esa chispa de inspiración, pero también la certeza de que, por ahora, mi energía debe estar en otro lugar.

No he desaparecido. Estoy aquí, aunque sea en silencio, observando y valorando el trabajo de todos vosotros. Cuando la vida me dé un respiro, volveré con más imágenes y historias que compartir. Hasta entonces, gracias por vuestra paciencia y por seguir creando belleza en este espacio que tanto quiero.
