In Shan State we signed up for a “hill‑tribe trek,” a phrase that for many people suggests a wild journey to hidden villages deep in untouched jungle. What we actually found was more ordinary, and more honest. The walk began at the edge of town, past tea shops, concrete houses and small roadside stalls, then slowly turned into dirt tracks between fields and low, sometimes burned hills. It was still a change of world, just not the postcard one.

The “remote” villages we reached were clusters of wooden or bamboo houses on stilts, a concrete water tank in the middle, maybe a tiny shop with instant noodles and cigarettes, people working in the fields, children watching the newcomers. When we stayed overnight, we slept on thin mattresses laid on wooden floors under mosquito nets, with simple toilets and short bursts of electricity from a small generator. Less a wild expedition than a quiet look at how ordinary hill‑country life actually works.

Gerade noch rechtzeitig vor dem Ende der Blühsaison konnte ich vom Türkenbund (Lilium martagon) eine Aufnahme machen. Man sieht neben der wunderschönen Blüte eine bereits verwelkte (links) und oben sich bildende Fruchtstände. Die Aufnahme entstand in einem fränkischen Laubmischwald.
Der Türkenbund gilt in Deutschland nicht als gefährdet, ist jedoch nach der Bundesartenschutzverordnung besonders geschützt. Wie alle Liliengewächse ist der Türkenbund hochgiftig besonders für Katzen.

Just in time before the end of the flowering season, I managed to take a photograph of the martagon lily (Lilium martagon). Alongside the beautiful flower, you can see one that has already wilted (on the left) and fruit clusters forming at the top. The photograph was taken in a mixed deciduous forest in Franconia.
The martagon lily is not considered endangered in Germany, but is specially protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance. Like all members of the lily family, the martagon lily is highly toxic, particularly to cats.

Häufig besuchte ich in den letzten Jahren ohne Erfolg einen Weiher in der Nähe, in dem sich die Ringelnatter (Natrix natrix) aufhalten soll. Gestern bei warmem Wetter und Sonnenschein konnte ich in den Nachmittagsstunden ein großes erwachsenes Tier (siehe Foto und PiP)) und mehrere Jungtiere beobachten. Welch ein Erlebnis. Die Ringelnatter zählt nach der aktuellen Roten Liste Deutschland zu den gefährdeten Tieren und ist nach dem Bundesartenschutzgesetz streng geschützt.

Over the last few years, I have often visited a nearby pond where the grass snake (Natrix natrix) is said to live, but without success. Yesterday, in warm, sunny weather, I was able to spot a large adult (see photo and PiP) and several juveniles during the afternoon. What an experience. According to the current German Red List, the grass snake is classified as an endangered species and is strictly protected under the Federal Species Protection Act.

Ein beinahe furchterregendes Insekt ist diese Kamelhalsfliege, möglicherweise die Schwarzhalsige Kamelhalsfliege (Venustoraphidia nigricollis). Kamelhalsfliegen existieren bereits seit über 200 Millionen Jahren und haben sich seit der Zeit der Dinosaurier kaum verändert. Sie sind somit "lebende Fossilien". Es sind kleine, harmlose, räuberisch lebende Insekten. Insekt des Jahres 2022!

This snakefly is an almost terrifying insect; it is possibly the black-necked snakefly (Venustoraphidia nigricollis). Camel neckflies have been around for over 200 million years and have hardly changed since the time of the dinosaurs. They are therefore ‘living fossils’. They are small, harmless, predatory insects. Insect of the year 2022!
