Riepenburger Mühle (2 PiP)

In den Vierlanden im Ortsteil Kirchwerder steht seit 1318 eine Windmühle, die ursprünglich innerhalb der befestigten Schlossanlage des Ritters Ribe lag. Nach mehreren Um- und Neubauten wurde 1828 diese Holländerwindmühle errichtet, in der auch heute noch mit Windkraft Getreide gemahlen wird.
Erhalten und betrieben wird sie vom Verein Riepenburger Mühle, unterstützt vom Denkmalschutzamt.
In Schauvorführungen wird Mehl produziert, das sich deutlich vom Industriemehl unterscheidet, denn das Getreide wird unbehandelt gemahlen, d.h. der ölhaltige Keim mit den gesunden Mineralstoffen verbleibt im Korn.

Die wunderschöne Ansicht der Mühlen kann man auf dem Hügel von Campo de Criptana bestaunen. Drei Mühlen haben hier noch ihr original Mahlwerk aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. In ihnen wird einmal im Monat zu Schauzwecken noch Getreide gemahlen. Die anderen sind auf den Ruinen ihrer Vorgänger wieder aufgebaut und innen meistens leer. Die zwölf Fenster oben unter der Dachkante diente den Müllern zur Ermittlung der Windrichtung. So konnten sie die Flügel ihrer Mühlen richtig ausrichten.

D’Orangemolen (d'Orange Mill) is a round brick smock mill. The flour mill was commissioned in 1734 by the Prince of Orange. The mill was leased to the miller who offered the most. It was called the ‘compulsive mill’, because all local farmers were obliged to use d'Orangemolen for grinding their grain.

During the liberation in 1945 after World War II, the mill was damaged and subsequently restored several times. Nowadays the mill - with a white plastered rain side - is privately owned, but is still fully operational.

The Ostmühle (East Mill) on the Mühlenberg (100 meter above sea level) in Gildehaus is a Dutch-style tower mill. The mill was built in 1749/1750 from Bentheim sandstone and has a long and turbulent history. Three year before a violent storm destroyed a wooden mill on the same spot. The mill was privately owned from 1913 to 1986. It was in danger of being demolished several times.

After a restoration the mill has been in operation again. Today, it is preserved as a historical monument and is open to the public on certain days, allowing visitors to see its historic milling equipment.

Un moulin en activité depuis le XVIIIe siècle
Érigé en 1744, le Moulin à Vent du Cotentin est une véritable prouesse d’ingénierie : sa toiture pivote à 360° pour capter au mieux le vent. Après plus d’un siècle d’activité, il a dû s’incliner face aux minoteries modernes en 1848… Mais son histoire ne s’est pas arrêtée là !
Restauré avec passion en 1997, il a retrouvé son souffle et fait revivre un savoir-faire ancestral, grâce aux soutiens financiers du Conseil Général de la Manche, Créavenir, Agralco et de la Communauté de Communes de Portbail.

Aujourd’hui, géré par l’agglomération du Cotentin, c’est l’un des derniers moulins à vent en fonctionnement, produisant une authentique farine de meule de blé, de sarrasin et d’épeautre.
Accompagnés du meunier ou de la meunière, vous explorerez les trois niveaux de travail du moulin et assisterez à chaque étape du processus de fabrication.

Datant de 1744, le moulin à vent du Cotentin est un moulin "Tour". Cela signifie que seule la toiture, portant les ailes, glisse sur un rail situé au sommet de la tour pour amener les ailes face au vent (à la différence du moulin « Pivot » où tout le corps du moulin pivote).

Rénové en 1997, grâce à la volonté de la Communauté de Communes et du Conseil Général, c’est aujourd’hui un des rares exemples de moulin en état de fonctionnement dans le Cotentin.

Situé à 120 mètres d’altitude, le site offre un panorama exceptionnel sur le bocage normand.

L’ancienne maison du meunier, également rénovée, abrite une auberge de terroir

Another view of this Windpump masquerading as a Windmill.
Horsey Windpump is a historic drainage windmill located near the village of Horsey, in Norfolk, England. It is also known as Horsey Windmill in some sources. Unlike many windmills built for grinding grain, this structure was created to help drain the low-lying marshes and fen land in the Broads area. A windpump has stood on the site since at least the early 18th century, the current tower was built in 1912. A major restoration project began in 2016: the cap and sails were removed, rebuilt, and in 2019 the windpump reopened to visitors with the sails functioning again (for the first time since 1943).

After posting a photo from Wells-next-the-Sea (PiP), just some days ago on here I was reminded of a gem of a windmill just a short 12km from here at Cley. Cley next the sea is described as an 18th-centary landmark village and this mill holds special memories for me as a) I have actually stopped here for a night, long ago now and b) have attended my niece’s wedding in the same windmill just 12 years back. This was taken on that occasion whilst waiting for the ceremony to begin-I think! The mill was built in the early 19th c. It is a five-story tower mill with a fixed cap that no longer turns in the wind.

Another Norfolk windmill that has been turned into holiday accommodation. Built in 1816 and last worked in 1919. It was restored in 1957 with a new cap and sails replaced again in 1981. The PiP shows the mill against the light from the main road towards the coast only about four miles north of here.
