Why I [eventually] chose this for WPD in 2025:-

I enjoyed the jam-making process, and this time it brought back a very happy childhood memory - whenever either of my parents were busy and didn't want me interrupting them at whatever they were doing, their response to my question was "making jam" ... I got my own back --- much more recently, my father and I were arranging a trip to Poland for an Esperanto event, and phoning each other quite often. One night he rang me, but I really was in the middle of making jam ! He, and I found that very funny when I called him back ...

Mein Beitrag zum Weltfotografietag kommt diesmal mit Verspätung, ich war unterwegs. Meine Idee dabei war auch diesmal : zeige Menschen zusammen. Hier in der Abendstunde am Badesee „Ricklinger Dreiecksteich“.

Das ist auch deswegen ein besonders Foto für mich, weil wir endlich mal einen einfach angenehmen Sommertag hatten. In den Wochen zuvor war es entweder brütend heiß, oder kaltnass. So dass man kreislaufmässig ordentlich durchgeschüttelt wurde. Und anschliessend ging es genau so weiter.

Dazu passt für mich eine besondere Version des Summertime-Klassikers

At first on Word Photography Day is was quite overcast but the weather forecast said it should be a bit brighter later :-) I had thought of going to Oxford {now that's a surprise :-)} but it was probably going to be too much of a rush so I thought of the Grand Union Canal at Bulbourne and figured if there was going to be a bit of sun there might me some reflections and narrowboats to photograph :-)

The following is from the 'Canal & River Trust' -
"The Grand Union Canal links London to Birmingham, passing through rolling countryside, industrial towns and quaint villages. It's our longest canal. From the vibrant heart of London, it leads you out into the rolling Chiltern Hills, through rural Northamptonshire and Warwickshire and into the Birmingham suburbs. The canal's striking historic features include the dramatic span of the Iron Trunk Aqueduct and the steeply climbing Hatton Lock Flight, set in charming Warwickshire countryside."

Das Herzstück eines Teilchenbeschleunigers und eine kleine Spielerei zum Weltfotografietag:-). Das blaue Licht im Bild habe ich mit einem LUMIS Solo 2 Würfel erzeugt, ein nettes kleines vielseitiges Spielzeug.

Für mich hat Fotografieren viele Facetten. Inzwischen ist dieses Hobby bei mir die #1 geworden. Ich freue mich, dass wir unserer Leidenschaft bis ins hohe Alter frönen können. Hier wollte ich einem Alltagsgegenstand (18kg Trommel im Waschsaloon) etwas Anerkennung zollen.

Nearly 50 years ago, this building in Harrisburg, Illinois housed the photography studio of Roy Small. It was through him I took my first photography class in 1978. It was a non-credited college course while I was 17 and still in high school, and it was held here in his studio. Two years after I attended his class, he became the general manager of the local newspaper "The Daily Register." Roy died in 2012.

Taken on August 19th, 2025, with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR.

I was going to post a film image of this building, but the film I used was so expired, it didn't turn out good enough to post. Hence I used the digital "backup" version of the same subject for my submission on World Photography Day.

Flower strips at the edge of fields – a feast for the eyes with potential for more

The strip of flowers in front of the cornfield is part of conventional farming practices. It provides food sources and habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, as well as support for pollination and biodiversity, thus fulfilling important ecological functions.

While flower strips are pleasing to the eye, they should be seen as part of a larger optimization potential. This includes expanding more sustainable crop rotations, remediating soil, and managing resources.

In short, flower strips enrich the landscape ecologically and aesthetically, and they indicate that real change requires more than symbolic solutions.

I am delighted by and grateful for the technical possibilities available today that allow us to capture and reproduce visual impressions individually.

Spielgerät an der Dützer Windmühle

Zum Weltfotografietag hatte ich keinen Plan, was ich fotografieren sollte.

An der Dützer Windmühle (PiPs) fand ich dieses Spielgerät für Kinder, dass die Kinderherzen höher schlagen lässt. Es fällt sofort auf, dass der Wagen abgesperrt ist. Jedes Kind (und auch Erwachsener) denkt, warum darf ich damit nicht spielen? Die Enttäuschung ist groß, weil die Erwartung nicht erfüllt wird.

Warum ist gerade dieses nicht gerade spektakuläre Foto mein Beitrag zum Weltfotografietag? Ich möchte auf eine Veränderung in der Gesellschaft aufmerksam machen, am Beispiel Kindheit früher und Kindheit heute.

Zu meiner Kindheit, Ende der 1950er bis in die 1960er Jahre, hatten wir wenig Spielzeug. Wir spielten viel draußen. Es gab viele Kinder in der Nachbarschaft, so dass man immer Spielkameraden fand. Wir waren uns dabei weitgehend selbst überlassen und gestalteten unser Spiel ideenreich und phantasievoll. Mit unseren Fahrrädern machten wir weite Erkundungsfahrten, ohne dass unsere Eltern davon wussten. Handys gab es nicht. Wir hatten nicht einmal 20 Pfennige dabei, um notfalls aus einer Telefonzelle anrufen zu können. Meine Eltern hatten auch noch kein Telefon. Wir Kinder erlebten so ein stückweit Freiheit und Selbstverantwortung. Wir lernten, auf uns aufzupassen. In der Familie wurden noch Werte vermittelt.

Heute sieht man viel weniger Kinder auf der Straße, weil es weniger Kinder gibt und weil sie häufig zu Hause hocken. Smartphones und Playstations verändern das Spielverhalten. Der direkte Kontakt zu anderen Kindern, der für die Sozialentwicklung so wichtig ist, wird geringer. In manchen Familien findet keine Erziehung mehr statt. Kinder werden sich regellos selbst überlassen. Mit schwerwiegenden Folgen!
Statt dessen gibt es mehr Reglementierungen durch die Gesellschaftsordnung. Man versucht Probleme und Gefahren von vornherein auszuschließen. Spielplätze werden abgesperrt oder abgebaut, weil das Spielgerät offenbar nicht mehr ganz sicher ist (Hauptbild). Die Betreiber befürchten Klagen, wenn es zum Unfall kommt. Dabei müssen Kinder auch Fehler machen dürfen, um daraus zu lernen. Der Umgang mit Freiheit und Eigenverantwortung muss erlernt werden. Ein übertriebener Schutzschirm hilft dabei nicht.

Mich würde interessieren, wie ihr darüber denkt. Schreibt gerne eure Gedanken dazu auf.

Zum Weltfotografietag war ich in Kassel bei meinen Enkeln. Für sie war es ein sehr aufregender Tag, da beide eingeschult wurden und ein neuer Lebensabschnitt beginnt.
Um für ein bisschen Entspannung zu sorgen, machten wir einen Spaziergang in der Karlsaue und hier sieht man den Küchengraben.
Kinder veröffentliche nicht im Internet, deshalb kein Foto meinen Enkeln, das ist eigentlich traurig dient aber zu deren Schutz.

World Photography Day, August 19th, 2025.

Bismarck-Denkmal im Alten Elbpark in Hamburg.

The picture I made from the top of an hotel tower and I went up there by the hotel lift - not really knowing if I could go up there without beeing a guest ; )
I knew this special POV from a former visit since one can have a great view over the Hamburg harbour - my hometown:

I started that day by bike to take a picture for this event, however had at first no idea what object would be suitable. And so I made some shots around this quarter. Only later at home I made the choice for this picture. Its a giant stone sculpture of the former chancellor Bismarck, who of course is a historic figure but nowadays in dicussion concerning his role in Germanys colonial politics and wars.
But I thought the position of the historic sculpture in the style of 1900 would be a good contrast to the modern architecture around. And also that I haven't seen yet photos of this statue from this POV.
