It will have been around 1910 that these two sisters, my Tully cousins, will have sat for this portrait in front of one of those huge box-like old cameras where the photographer disappeared under a black sheet. The negative appeared near miraculously on a sheet of thin glass. What is as amazing is that a pile of these old glass negatives have survived more than 120 years, Having bought an LED Light Panel a few days ago I have been able to examine them properly and invert them to positives with the help of Photoshop and their neural filters. I am astonished by the quality which has been entirely preserved in this old form of photography. So if you find yourself inheriting a bunch of old glass negatives, I would implore you not to drive them to the dump! They could represent invaluable family history!

Postmarked in Rochester, Minn., May 14, 1910, and addressed to "Miss Hilda Swanson, #85 Cambridge Ave., St. Paul, Minn. Macalaster Park, c/o James Beddie."

Handwritten message: "Rochester, Minn. Dear Aunt Hilda, I have not heard from you for a long time, but I had a card from Myrtle today and she said you had gone to St. Paul to live. Mama has been sick all the time lately. She seems to have a cold all the time. She has been lying down all morning. I hope she gets better. How are poor little James and William. Mama says that she wishes you would write soon and tell her. With love and kisses, Beth."

A couple of turkeys arrive at (or depart from?) the United States Capitol Building, Washington, D.C., in this illustration from a Thanksgiving postcard dated 1910.

The postcard is addressed on the other side to "Mrs. Geo Hamlin, 9 Dean[e] St., Portland, Me.," and postmarked in New York City on November 23, 1910.

Handwritten message: "Rena & Geo out for a ride. Best love to both of you & hope you have a happy Thanksgiving. Kitty."

Rena (1882-1974) and George Hamlin (1882-1958) were both twenty-eight years old and had been married for about three years when they received this postcard. It's possible that Kitty, the sender of the card, was Catherine Lewis, Rena's mother.

Steam locomotive #1910 was built by ALCO (American Locomotive Company) in 1925 (construction no. 66284), wheels 2-8-2, gauge 4' 8½". It worked at sugar mill "Ifrain Alfonso" and is now displayed at sugar mill "Marcelo Salado". Here is a link to an image which shows it in operation:

A religious group which has its roots in North America found its way to the small town of Tuncurry on the mid-north coast of New South Wales in the early days of white settlement... the Wright family of Tuncurry who were pioneers of this regional town have come to the attention of the Mormon Church in the United States because many of them are direct descendants of the founder of the faith, Joseph Smith...In 1830 the Book of Mormon was published and Joseph and his followers formally organised a Church in the state of New York.

(John and Catherine Wright's son Sidney Garden Wright, arriving in America with missionaries, married Ina Inez, in 1891, who was the granddaughter of Joseph Smith. Ina returned with Sidney and they both lived in Tuncurry)

Joseph Smith ran for president of the United States in 1844 with his theory of Theodemocracy, which he described as 'God and the people ruling in righteousness'.

Young polar explorers wear warm clothes to celebrate Thanksgiving at "the Pole" in this postcard illustration from 1910. But which pole--North or South?

Frederick Cook claimed that he reached the North Pole in 1908, and Robert Peary said that he arrived there in 1909. Around the same time, Roald Amundsen and Robert Falcon Scott were attempting to be the first to reach the South Pole.

In the 1900s and 1910s, polar expeditions received widespread attention in newspapers and magazines in the same way that the later news media covered the race to the moon in the 1960s and 1970s. The publisher's generic caption about "the Pole" gave the postcard a longer shelf life since it applied equally to whichever direction--North or South--a polar expedition was going.

Printed on the other side of the postcard: "Thanksgiving Series No. 10"
