Bulleid Pacific West Country 34027 Taw Valley crosses over from shed road 2 to road 1 prior to backing down to take water. Its stock waits in Platform 1 behind in Loughborough Central station.

With frost on the ground the cold morning air is filled with the engine's exhaust giving the scene a steamy atmosphere.

From the Roman Bridge of Ourense, you can see the Millennium Bridge (2001), conceived by the architect Santiago Calatrava. This bridge is for road traffic, but the curved structures are for pedestrians, with stairsteps all along.

We learned to sail in a 12 foot dinghy, racing on inland lakes around Johannesburg 1976-1979, then on a 14 foot Hobie catamaran, racing in Hout Bay, near Cape Town 1981-1982.

After our return to England, we completed a Yacht Cruising Association course, in 1984, on the Solent in Hampshire, on a YCA 29 yacht, prior to our
sailing holidays in England, and the Mediterranean from 1984-1987.

The photo here is part of the Royal Yacht Association log books which we had for completing a Day Skipper Course and Coastal Skipper course, in 1986/7, to improve our sailing and navigational skills. The left log book shows my Coastal Skipper certificate. Having these certificates and log books made it easier to charter yachts in England and the Mediterranean.

The right one is part of Ian's log of actual voyages, with yacht names, dates, days on board, etc. Mine is similar, although Ian had one extra trip when he sailed around the Cape of Good Hope in a Sadler 32.

Before Examination for the RYA/DoT Coastal Skipper certificate the following sailing experience is required:
20 days living on board
400 miles logged at sea
12 hours night sailing

When we moved to Australia we had sailing holidays in the Whitsundays, and other places, mostly chartering yachts. Then we had our own boats from 1991 to 2001.

In 2002 we moved to Noosa, which has a shallow river unsuitable for deep keel boats, so we chartered a few times, and did various day sails.

Sailing is such a joyful experience, using the power of the wind, and enjoying the freedom of being out on the water. It does require a level of agility and fitness.
Nowadays we are trying out large cruise ships, the last one being the Cunard Queen Elizabeth, a short trip from Melbourne to Brisbane, via Sydney.

I would imagine (and hope) that many, many people will be stopping today to remember the horrific events of 11th September 2001. So many mental images that will never, ever leave our minds and hearts. People from so many different countries, not just the US. So many stories of loss and heartbreak - and so many stories of bravery and heroic actions. Remembering .... all those who lost their lives on that fateful day: all those who lost loved ones and close friends or fellow workers; all those who rushed in to "do their job" or "to help others" in any way they could. Remembering .... all those who were severely injured on that fateful day and who have bravely suffered every day since then; all those Firemen, Emergency Medical people, Police - men and women, who have suffered and continue to suffer emotionally and physically, including illnesses caused by being exposed to harmful chemicals. The list goes on and on. Remembering ... and praying that we never see another day like September 11th, 2001.

A mere seven years or so after Captain Cook travelled to the antipodes and took a look at the east coast of Australia, Richard Brinsley Sheridan shocked and delighted his 18th century audience with the staging of this work.

Considered by many as his best, it builds on his earlier successes which deal with a variety of situations and complexities brought about by society gossip mongers.

Directed by Judy Davis, starring Colin Friels and Essie Davis.

When we were living in Sydney in 2001, we saw this play at the Sydney Opera House.
