Gordale Scar waterfalls

After recently being reminded of this area I thought it was time to show this. A 2010 adventure for us exploring Gordale Scar in the Yorkshire Dales near Malham. We were supposed to climb up with the river here, like these intrepid walkers but after heavy rains we declined and got no further than this.

"Gordale Scar is a limestone ravine 1 mile north-east of Malham, North Yorkshire, England. It contains two waterfalls and has overhanging limestone cliffs over 330 feet high. The gorge could have been formed by water from melting glaciers or a cavern collapse. Wikipedia"

As Winter took hold of this spot just to the north of Pendle Hill one can see and understand the real beauty of snow and light. Taken thirteen years ago whilst visiting a nearby hostelry for a birthday celebration. It was one of our coldest days for many years at -8C in the middle of the day but this short walk to what to us was a familiar spot was well worth the frosty fingers.

A trip to London in 2010 brings us to the London home of our Royal family. A drab day that does not bring out the best of the building. Behind it, is one of the nicest gardens in London. This weekend in May 2023, it is the scene of thousands of well-wishers as the pageantry of the Kings Coronation takes place with its marching bands and the royal family on the balcony too.

Built as a large townhouse for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and acquired by King George III in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte. It became known as The Queen's House. During the 19th century it was enlarged with the construction of three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace became the London residence of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. ~ Wiki

My 2010 ‘Yanks’ photo posted a couple of days ago, reminded me that I had not posted any of the locomotives on here. I shall try to make up for that now.
We are just outside the village of Oxenhope and stood on the grass banks waiting for this train to pass us. It is the Class 4, 2-6-4T, 80002 with its special name for this occasion of ‘The Winton Train Prague-Harworth’. It has been living at the KWVR since 1969 but in 2013, it was withdrawn from service now being on show at Oxenhope for static viewing.

Greetings from the winters of old. When snow was snow and we could afford to heat up our homes. At one time in our lives, we seriously considered purchasing one of the houses in that remote row, not a million miles from where we are now. We did not, as we thought access to and from the house would be very difficult in Winter but we have seldom had a lot of snow since this shot. Ah well –life goes on.

A great memory for me here at a spot I loved to frequent some time back. This bridge led to a small fishing stand but when I was here last, even the bridge had disappeared. However the whole scene demonstrates again the beauty of our Earth and its diverse wildlife which is now in a lot of danger. Let’s hope that the New Year brings new hope against global warming and peace on Earth too. The Pip shows another from the same pond.

It just remains for me to say HFF and enjoy the coming New Year

Saddleworth church in Winter
This is the Parish church of Saddleworth and is called St Chad. It is said that there has been a place of worship on this site since 1215 AD but this present church was built between 1830-1833.
This photo, like its accompanying PiP was taken some time back but I can vouch that the scene remains exactly the same today. We had snow here too, some days ago but it is has gone again now. The smoke is rising from the local Inn, called, of course ‘The Church Inn’. Famous for its own unique beers and good fayre in an atmosphere of open log fires.

As Britain celebrates our Queens Platinum Jubilee this weekend, I share memories of my visit to London in 2010. Here we have the famous Tower Bridge taken in the golden hour.

Tower Bridge is a Grade I listed combined bascule and suspension bridge, built between 1886 and 1894, designed by Horace Jones and engineered by John Wolfe Barry with the help of Henry Marc Brunel.

Dunure Castle

Another castle within easy reach of the Scottish town of Ayr and only about five miles south of Greenan Castle. Captured in the golden hour on a late October day in 2010.

"The site dates from the late 13th century; the earliest charter for the lands dating from 1256, but the remains of the building are of 15th- and 16th-century origin. One tradition says that the castle was built by the Danes. Another claims that the Mackinnons held the castle from Alexander III as a reward for their valour at the Battle of Largs.
The castle is the point of origin of the Kennedys of Carrick (not to be confused with the American Kennedy family), who once ruled over much of south western Scotland and were granted the lands in 1357. Sir James Balfour described Dunure as "a grate and pleasand stronge housse, the most ancient habitation of the surname of Kennedy, Lairds of Dunure, now Earles of Cassiles."
In August 1563, Mary, Queen of Scots, visited the castle for three days during her third progress round the west of the country.
The Celtic name Dunure or Dunoure is said to derive from the "hill" or "fort of the yew tree". Wiki

Greenan Castle reflections, Ayr.

A moment to savour this old 16th century castle at Ayr, Scotland. This tower was actually the scene of some unsavoury events but I hope my photo shows only its beauty.
‘The lands of Greenan were forfeited by John, Earl of Ross and Lord of the Isles in 1476 for treason against James III. In 1493 James IV granted the Lands of Greenan to William Douglas, son of Archibald, Earl of Angus. The first known defensive structure on the site was a promontory fort, probably a fortified farmstead, enclosing around 1 acre. Four concentric curved ditches, each around 3 metres wide, cut off the headland with the exception of a single causeway to provide access. It is not known how long this settlement was occupied, but the site was re-used in the twelfth century. Beside the tower are traces of a walled courtyard and outbuildings—probably stables and a kitchen block, as the small tower has no kitchen within its walls. The castle passed through various members of the clan before ending up in the hands of Thomas Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis in 1766. Around this time the residential use of the castle seems to have stopped; today the structure is a ruin.’ WiKi

Dovestones reservoir – A winter Idyll

Another winter look of this local water. Rich reflections coupled with the snow covered moors and blue skies make a winning combination. A few years old now, but as I comment on many photos here; “a beautiful landscape is a beautiful landscape no matter what age.” For those that do not know this reservoir, a wheelchair walk circles the entire Dovestones dam reservoir and it is about 2.6 miles. See my PiP for part of the path just right of the trees you see here. That being said, it was taken three years after this one and so has quite a different look to it.

We think it was cold this year, but a few years back it was even colder up here in Saddleworth. Here we are back again at the second reservoir in the Dovestones chain, called Yeoman Hey. I will let the sun, snow, ice, shadows and mist talk for themselves.

Windsor Castle, London

As our Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 94th official birthday for the first time ever at Windsor castle, a couple of days ago, I was reminded of our brief visit to the same place ten years ago. The weather on that day was quite miserable but last Saturday, the sun was shining on the brightly red clad unique Welsh Guards as they performed the ceremony on this lawn. It is only the second time in her 68-year reign that the usual parade in central London has not gone ahead.
