Houses on the banks of the Canal du Haut Pont at Le Doulac in the northern outskirts of St Omer - the centre ville is in the right distance with the cathedral on the skyline.

The ridge and furrow pattern is not altogether obvious on the land itself in this shot but the wavy fence clearly follows the surface & the telephoto lens emphasises the relief.

It is an archaeological pattern of ridges and troughs created by a system of ploughing used in Europe during the Middle Ages, typical of the open field system. The earliest examples date to the immediate post-Roman period and the system was used until the 17th century in some areas. Clearly these fields reverted to grassland and may not have been ploughed for 100s of years!

Brilliant sunshine on the platforms of Rugby Midland station as a Virgin Railways Class 390 Pendolino electric multiple unit runs into platform 1 with a train for Birmingham. Trains were badly delayed or cancelled due to a truck striking an under-bridge between Birmingham and Coventry. We took a London Midland Trains emu to Euston which was only 20 minutes late.

The footbridge over the ex-LNWR "Leeds New Line" dates from the line’s opening in 1900 but today it is almost disappearing into the jungle. The ex-LYR Calder Valley line lies beyond just west of Heaton Lodge Junction where the two run parallel.

After arriving with the 12.15 service from Loughborough on our immaculate "Royal Engine", LMS Fowler 3F 0-6-0T 47406, we have just run round and I've hooked up again. 47406 was built by Vulcan Foundry in Lancashire for the LMS in 1926.

In this view northwards it took some cropping to remove the high 1970s bridge and leave the buildings and chimneys of Dean Clough Mills to stand alone. Built in the 1840s–60s for Crossley's Carpets & once one of the world's largest carpet factories the mill closed in 1983 & was bought by a consortium to develop the Grade II listed site for various commercial and cultural uses. This included returning the Millstone Grit stonework to its former beauty.

In the foreground is the parapet of the Victorian cast & wrought-iron North Bridge which spans the Hebble Valley. As well as the river Hebble extensive railway yards were once located in the valley and in fact the Halifax & Ovenden Railway jointly with Halifax Corporation financed the construction of North Bridge which was completed in 1871. Until 1960 the former HOR North Bridge station was located beneath the bridge to the right.

In the UK you normally associate Roman remains with ruins or partially ruined buildings but since it was cleaned up the Pyramid by the Porta San Paolo in Rome looks like it was built last year!

In fact the Pyramid of Caius Cestius was built in 12 BC which explains why the Aurelian Wall, itself built in 275 AD, abuts either side of it. An interesting fact about the pyramid is that it was built by Caius Cestius' freed slaves in his honour in 330 days. Proving the old proverb: One volunteer is worth ten pressed men.

The Porta San Paolo on the right was one of the major gateways into imperial Rome through the city wall built by Emperor Aurelian and extended in the 5th century.

We were considering turning in ready for the very early start but a night-time shot of BR Standard 4-6-2 70013 Oliver Cromwell in road 6 and LNER Gresley A4 4-6-2 60009 Union of South Africa in road 8 was too much to miss. West Coast Railways Class 47 47237 and Class 37 37518 were thrown in for good measure.

70013 would be departing from Victoria on the Cathedrals Express the next day while 60009 was being prepped for the Dorset Coast Express the day after.

A DB electric loco pulls 5 double-deck Regional coaches southwards across the famous Rendsburg High railway bridge & viaduct high over the Kiel Canal. It is known more descriptively as the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal in German & was opened in 1913.

In order to allow the railway line to pass above the canal, the bridge has a clearance of 42 metres over the canal's mean water level. The required maximum incline of 1:150 (one metre gain in altitude per 150 metres distance) made it necessary to build elevated embankments and access bridges of about 5.5 km at each side. To serve Rendsburg station, situated at ground level only a couple of hundred metres from the main bridge, the railway line is routed through a large 360-degree loop on the north bank of the canal

My father crossed over this bridge and loop in 1945 while returning on RAF leave from Copenhagen by train and it made a very big impression on him. On me too when he told me about it hence my detour to grab a few shots. What he didn't tell me and I have since discovered was that it is also a transporter bridge so I missed the chance to cross over on it....... Next time!

Even the locals stopped to watch the train!

A side view of Huddersfield's 1847 station building and 1880s train shed (on the left) taken from the top of St George's Street just off Westgate.

With no modern traffic to date it this street view could be from the 1950s-60s.

We weren’t alone in Southall steam shed. British Railways Standard pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell stands ready for her fitness to run exam prior to working a main line special from London Victoria to Hastings the following day while Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45212 was cooling down after her main line run earlier that week.

The train is in the platform, the rays are slanting through the loco's smoke & the Starter is pulled off but I still have time to get on board.

This was the day of the inaugural run of British Railways Standard 5 4-6-0 73156 and as a shareholder my seat was booked.

The GCR bonfire was still burning but the fireworks were finished and we returned to Loughborough on the Class 101 diesel multiple unit. It is seen in Quorn station platform 2. The train on the right was for Leicester North.
