The unique bedroom window at the National Trust house Stoneywell. This house built in 1899 was designed by Arts & Crafts pioneer Earnest Gimson as a summer house away from the Leicester industry.

On a grey winter day BR Standard pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell has a green on the Section signal as we leave Loughborough with the 14.00 train to Leicester.

Cromwell was only 4 days from withdrawal for its 10 year overhaul but ran beautifully. Although kept spruced up for its last few days it had acquired an authentic "lived-in" patina.

In August 2023 the boiler is still at Tyseley being overhauled but the bottom end is complete. Covid has severely delayed the return but it is hoped to have 70013 back in steam by the end of 2023/early 2024.

We were in Trier for the Dampf Spektakel so most of our time was spent at the station! However we did explore the city centre and this most impressive building is the Porta Nigra a monumental Roman gateway dating from the Second century AD.

The grey clouds are down on the mountains but there is a colourful bridge over the West Highland railway Line behind the fence on the right & the A82 road behind the other fence on the left. Taken near County Marsh Summit to the north of Tyndrum in the Scottish Highlands. Seen en route from Fort William to Glasgow.

DB electric 185 198-9 on a tank train heading north towards Koblenz passes the ruins of Ehrenfels Castle and the vineyards on the east bank of the Rhine.

Together with the Mäuseturm and the Klopp Castle it formed a northward barrier from the 13th Century, in order to protect the territory of the archbishopric of Mainz. The castle, which was used in times of war as a hiding place for the cathedral treasury of Aachen, was extensively destroyed in 1689.

Detail of the motion on BR Standard pacific 70013 Oliver Cromwell at Loughborough.

Cromwell was only 4 days from withdrawal for its 10 year overhaul but ran beautifully. Although kept spruced up for its last few days it has acquired an authentic "lived-in" appearance.

The overhaul is still continuing but it is hoped to have Cromwell back in steam during 2023.

Five years ago to the day we took a river trip along the beautiful Rhine gorge between Koblenz and Bingen/Rudesheim.

This is the Burg Reichenstein in Trechtingshausen on the west bank of the river. Of course there has to be a train somewhere - just in view on the left is an electric multiple unit heading north towards Bingen with a power boat on the right seemingly racing it....

And oh yes, there is a fence so HFF everyone. Have a great weekend

British Railways Standard 2 2-6-0 78018 passing through Rushcliffe Halt on the northern section of the GCR with the 12.30 Santa Special. 78018 has just come off the single track section from Ruddington and is passing the disused Hotchley Hill signal box. These days we use smokeless fuel so no more dramatic skies and less pollution!
