One from a walk around Digley reservoir not too far from my home in Oldham. It started off with a sunny bright morning but on our way back the clouds opened and we had heavy rain but soon it cleared again and introduced this rainbow.
A contender perhaps for this Octobers CWP competition of Rainbows that starts tomorrow.

Last year whilst on a trip to The Mull of Kintyre we visited Skipness and its castle. Whilst there we took a short stroll along its pebbled beach with vistas over to Arran. The small white houses on the centre of this shoreline belong to the village of Lochranza, home of a grand ruined castle and a fine distillery. Perhaps really though, the star of this view is the magnificent sky.

Another look at the ‘Dark Hedges’ of County Antrim in Northern Ireland.

After being reminded of this scene by photos in that esteemed publication ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ my comparison photos taken last June (22) still seemed to lack something that made it extra special. Of course my limited two visits during specific times and one of those with lots of tourist dictated my output. I guess the thing that was missing in mine was the lack of trees that used to be there but have been blown over by severe storms during the last few years leaving big gaps in places akin to missing teeth. Here is my attempt at showing the density and encapsulating feeing of this lane by using a long lens, and monotones. Ideally I would have liked the road to be more centralised but… we have what we have :) See Pips.

A week spent in a cottage on the banks of this ‘Monmouthshire & Brecon’ canal in Wales gives me ample opportunities for waterside captures. Here is a bench situated just a few metres away from our abode giving you some idea of the layout. The carved title is the Welsh language name of the same canal. The next photo shows the real scene.

A homage to our late Queen here. There are a lot of these E.R (Elizabeth Regina: Queen Elizabeth) post boxes around and even many with G.R (George Rex: King George) inscribed. I wonder how many C.R post-boxes will be produced and lovingly kept going like this one seen in Northern Ireland. In these days of email and multi-media messaging it would seem that the days pf post-boxes are numbered.

We have had royal post boxes since the reign of Queen Victoria and there are a quite a few people who still search for and collect real sightings of the rarer ones. Here is a list of post-box monarchs:

VR – Queen Victoria : 1837-1901
ER VII – King Edward VII : 1901-1910
GR – King George V : 1910-1936
ER VIII – King Edward VIII : Jan-Dec 1936
GR VI – King George VI : 1936-1952
EIIR – Queen Elizabeth II : 1952-2022
CIIIR – King Charles III : 2022-present.

Willow Sculpture on Holy Island

On the eastern coast of Lindisfarne (Holy Island) and walking north, we come across this interesting piece of art in the form of a bird sculpture. It is in fact part of the 5km ‘Willow Sculpture Trail’ created by 'Anna' and volunteers. I think this might be the Arctic Tern. Our own trail heads north towards the white pyramid beacon that we thought at this point was a lighthouse - we abandoned that goal some few hundred metres before we got there.

Drinking fountain of Bamburgh

This is situated very near the castle in the main square of Bamburgh in Northumbria. Actually it is described as 'The Old Animal drinking fountain'. The fountain dates from the early 19th Century and is grade II listed.

Back in Digley Reservoir country and as we see another rainbow we also come across this horse and trap. Two, local farmers it seems giving the horse some exercise and grandfather an outing. They seemed to have come across something interesting here? ps, I am reminded that this is a mule, not a horse!

HBM from the Beadnell Lime Kilns

Another capture from out trip to Northumbria last year. These old kilns stand at the head of the harbour and now just give storage and shelter to the local fishing boat gear. On a good day the view over the sands and sea is astounding but on this one, we were not so lucky.
By lighting fires with coal in the kilns and adding crushed limestone, lime was produced and used as fertilizer in the nearby fields. The kilns were built by Richard Pringle in 1798 for the landowner John Wood. John Wood from whose estate the coal and limestone were extracted, completed the rest of the harbour there and maintained it in good repair. The first kiln was built in 1798, and the lime sold so well, that another 2 kilns were built soon afterwards. The kilns are around 8 metres tall and at the time, produced at least 1,000 carts of lime each year. The lime from the kilns was mainly exported to Scotland. My last photo of 2022 is one from our Northumberland trip to Bambugh in September. This one taken close to Bambugh lighthouse to the north of the village and castle itself. I do like the pincer effect rocks with what looks like a big ship out to the sea, which is in fact one of the Farne islands (Inner Farne) with its lighthouse and chapel. The more distant Islands are also part of the Farne Islands chain.

Issues Road wall and rainbow

Another capture from the Holm and Digley reservoir area. A very nice but wild farm lane here and quite wet too after very recent heavy rains. We are still some distance from our car but we are treated to a grand double rainbow as can be seen here. The PiP shows the same lane taken back in 2019 from the opposite side.

Our Dovestones reservoir area is surrounded in part by private land and some of that is used to rear pheasants in order to 'shoot' them for sport at various times of the year. Those birds are then eaten as a fine delicacy here in Britain. The pheasants whilst alive live a good life no doubt, with lots of easy good food left for them in very nice countryside. However many stray to different area's and here is one that I have shot with my camera whilst I could hear real shootings across the next distant reservoirs.
Of course my wife and I was calling good luck to this escapee.

County Antrim: Journey down the Dark Hedges

Way back in August I posted a photo of the Dark Hedges on here (See Pip), and promised another look at some time. Well the photo I posted then was taken in the morning and I got another chance to see it just as the sun was setting. Here is the result of that trip and the main point is the absence of any people at this late hour. (all the busses long gone!). A different format too and so I hope you enjoy this rendition as much as the first. (Take a trip to that photo for a fuller account of this famous lane.)

The ‘Christmas’ Robin comes out to greet us here in the natural countryside. It’s very cold and so we see it almost as a ball here. In this sort of weather the robin, like many small birds, plump up their feathers to keep warm air in and retain more of its heat around its small body. PiPs shows our house robins.

A surprise night visit to York gives us a chance to join this special walking tour. Our very professional wench host, Alice, takes us down the small lanes and corners to relate stories of ghost seen near that spot and other blood-curdling tales of days long past. York has a great deal of history from Roman, Viking and the dark-ages including our Civil war.
