The photo shows a snowy owl (Bubo scandiacus). The original photo can be seen as PiP: A shot in the Bispingen bird of prey enclosure (Lüneburg Heath), which I took in August (i.e. in summer) with a completely different background.
Using the image editing programme Luminar Neo, which is largely based on artificial intelligence (AI) functions, I automatically replaced the original background with a winter background. Of course, some post-processing was necessary to achieve the final result. Lesson learnt from this experiment: Don't trust anyone else's photo!

I was able to observe this pretty great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) at the Bispingen bird of prey enclosure (Lüneburg Heath) for some time. Not only birds of prey are shown here, but injured ones are also cared for and hatched offspring are released into the wild.

The longhorn moth (Nemophora degeerella) is a very small day-active moth (wingspan 18-20 mm) with incredibly long antennae (up to 4 times the wing length in males, much shorter in females). The larvae usually mine in leaves or flowers at the beginning, but later eat fallen leaves lying on the ground.
I found the moth at the edge of a forest.

The Lesser Purple emperor is a large butterfly that is brightly colored, but is not very noticeable. It lives in clearings and aisles of deciduous forests where the food plants of its caterpillars are found, namely willows and poplars. When sitting on paths or on the forest floor, it can hardly be seen, unless it is a male moth which, depending on the light, has a distinct blue tint on the upper surface of its wings (see PiP, taken from de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Batolec_%C4%8Derven%C3%BD_(Apatura_ilia)_.jpg
It is quite astonishing to come across such a large collection of winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) in the middle of a forest, which are normally only found in gardens. The winter aconites are actually native to southern Europe, but have been planted as ornamental plants in gardens here for several centuries. In the meantime, the winter aconite can also be found wild in vineyards, bushes and sparse forests, if the environmental conditions are right for it. It is therefore a neophyte, i.e. a new plant species in our native flora.
But beware: the whole plant is poisonous because of heart-active glycosides, especially the tubers!

The small copper is a colourful small butterfly whose upper wings are strikingly red (see PiP1), hence its name. The underside of the forewings is strikingly orange. The differences to the large copper butterfly are shown in PiP2. A special feature of the small copper is the territorial behaviour of the males. They also defend their own territory even against larger insects (e.g. large butterflies), which I have been able to observe myself when photographing small coppers.
The photo was taken in a nature reserve.

In my memory, summers used to be the best time of the year for us children, namely swimming pool time. Actually, the last summers also corresponded to this memory. However, the meteorological data are alarming: An above-average number of hot days, a frightening number of dry days and an extremely high number of sunny days with enormous effects on agriculture, natural ecosystems and health. Experts attribute the global climate change to the enormous CO2 emissions worldwide.
The picture shows a view of the grounds of the State Horticultural Show in Würzburg in 1990 on a glorious summer morning. You can see a wetland biotope with lush trees and a striking pyramid with PV elements and polygonum.

The small Holly Blue (Celastrina argiolus) is one of the few blue butterflies that can be identified quite reliably in the field. Most likely it can be confused with Glaucopsyche alexis (see PiP 1). The pale blue colouration of the wing top of both sexes (s. PiP 2, licence-free photo by Holger Gröschl naturspektrum.de) especially the very light colouration of the underside of the wings with a slight blue tinge and several black dots and lines, which can be clearly seen in the picture, are striking. This butterfly species is found in Europe, North Africa and North America in light biotopes as well as gardens, hence its German name "Garden Blue". Although it is widespread, it is nevertheless quite a rare butterfly species.

Diese Pilzart weist zwei Besonderheiten auf:
At the end of December 2022, on a felled oak tree, I found this popular edible mushroom that many know from the vegetable section of shops, namely the Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). This type of mushroom has two special features:
1. the fruiting body only forms at lower temperatures (+10 to -2 °C), i.e. at winter temperatures.
2. the fungus feeds not only on decaying plant material, but also on bacteria and nematodes in the soil (!). For more details, see the Wikipedia article. The catch mechanism is shown in the video.

Wikipedia-Artikel)!
de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemeiner_Spaltbl%C3%A4ttling
pilzbuch.pilzwelten.de/gemeiner-spaltblaettling/schizophyllum-commune.html
botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/feb2000.html
During a walk in December in a semi-natural mixed oak forest, I discovered a conspicuous, small mushroom (see PiP 1) on an oak trunk that had been lying on the ground for a long time, the underside of which showed a fascinating lamellar pattern (main image). I was able to identify it as a split gill fungus (Schizophyllum commune). In the black and white conversion, the lamellae pattern comes into its own particularly beautifully (PiP 2).
The ecological function of Schizophyllum commune is to break down the cellulose and lignin in the deadwood so that it decomposes into humus. Unfortunately, it can also infest living trees with fatal consequences.
Be careful when inhaling the spore powder! There are reports of bronchopulmonary mycoses in humans (see Wikipedia article)!

One day after the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian troops (24.02.2022), I visited an exhibition at the Kunsthalle Schweinfurt, where I found this artwork by Böhler & Orendt "Blossoms of Splendor". It is a wooden cube filled with burial soil and containing 400 small crosses with painted acorn hats. The intention of this work of art actually has nothing to do with war (see explanation in PiP), but one is involuntarily reminded of a war grave field. Hardly anyone could have guessed after the war against Ukraine began how long this murderous war would last and how much suffering and how many victims would have to be mourned.
I was very touched by this work of art at the time.

With this photo of a group of very small Mycena fungi I would like to end the publication of my mushroom photographs of the year 2022. My conclusion: Although many experts predicted a weak mushroom season after the dry and hot summer, the mushroom diversity in this year's autumn was unexpectedly very good. Rarely I have found so many species of mushrooms on my autumn walks as I did this year 2022. And one or other time there was also a wonderful mushroom dish for free.
