The Marines are proposing to expand the 29 Palms Marine Base to include Amboy Road, which is shown in red. The green lines show what would be the remaining routes north from the Palm Springs area.

We accidentally drove onto a gunnery range at the western edge of the 29 Palms Marine Base. In our attempt to take the shortest route out of the base we suddenly found ourselves in an old target, surrounded by unexploded ordnance. While Scott and I backed our way out, Gardner scoffed at our concern and picked up that thing at his feet. He reasoned that since there were no bomb craters and the asphalt target wasn't damaged, that no live ordnance were ever used here, that these were all training dummies.
