There were plans to build the north-south motorway before the Second World War, but the war delayed it. This piece of motorway was opened in 1958. There are 2 x 4 lanes.

The trains weren't running due to engineering works, the replacement buses were suspended because of storm Ciara, but they started running again when I arrived at Schiphol. The only delay was caused by a blocked viaduct at Leiden, so the bus had to divert to Wassenaar before it go to Leiden.

The A4 motorway from Amsterdam to The Hague has a bottleneck at Leiden, where the road crosses the Old Rhine. The bridge has only 2 x 2 lanes, which causes daily traffic jams. An aquaduct will be made, so that the road can pass under the Rhine. At the same time the road is widened to 2 x 3 lanes and the road will run below ground level, so there will be less nuisance for the people who live next to the motorway.
