The skyline of London is distressed, a definition of incoherence. It seems that each building design is approved on its individual merits with no thought for the overall effect on the city. The extent to which construction continues is evidenced by the appalling forest of cranes punctuating the buildings which have been completed. Of course, I expect a city to develop but with a plan and here there seems to be none.

This view north east from the Viewing Level of Switch House at Tate Modern serves to reinforce all these points. The comfortable, classic architecture of Cannon Street station and the Vintners' Hall is overshadowed by the steel and glass misjudgements which are now the symbols of the City.
