A Skyline Distressed - 29 March 2017

Many will disagree with me but, I hope, many will agree. The skyline of London is distressed, a definition of incoherence. It seems that each building design is approved on its individual merits with no thought for the overall effect on the city. The extent to which construction continues is evidenced by the appalling forest of cranes punctuating the buildings which have been completed. Of course, I expect a city to develop but with a plan and here there seems to be none.

This view north east from the Viewing Level of Switch House at Tate Modern serves to reinforce all these points. The comfortable, classic architecture of Cannon Street station and the Vintners' Hall is overshadowed by the steel and glass misjudgements which are now the symbols of the City.

The Colston Hall and Colston Tower are both landmark buildings of Bristol. Both are fascinating but, arguably, only the Hall could be described as attractive. In a moment over a cup of tea, I was able to 'see' this shot to illustrate this collision of 19th and 20th centuries.

Bristol has some very varied architecture most of which I enjoy. As the evening light deepened, I looked up to observe the tower of the Radisson Blu hotel and the adjacent block of serviced apartments, SACO Bristol.
