Sao Miguel island -- western half

Sao Miguel island isn't very big and it has two major volcano stumps on either end.
As you climb either slope, you get a pretty good view of the other half of the island.
This view is from the volcano on the western half.

While the two major mountains dominate the island, you can see many smaller cones sprinkled across the the landscape.

Here the trail led along a creek and was next to a swampy area full of (I think) algae color orange due to the high content of minerals and sulfur and sulfur-dioxide.
And I noticed the water in that swamp was not coming from the creek but it bubbled up directly from below -- though it was not hot.

And so I walked into that trap when the solid looking ground of the trail turned muddy and and I sank in ankle-deep.Not only wet, but covered with orange, smelly algae.

Is it a Trail or a major Road

This beautifully lined dirt road meandered between the fields.
On the map is was colored like a 2 lane, paved road.
I really enjoyed driving on all those tiny tracks between the fields.

The Azores are volcanic islands but there is no flowing lava. In most locations the last eruption is a few hundred years back. You still have secondary signs of volcanism : e.g. hot thermal springs, geysers and hot vents.

This is one portion of the geyser fields located near Furnas.

It is just RAIN not a sever weather system or a hurricane. It is a hurry-rain. that's is in a hurry to get out of here.
It still can rain on your parade -- and this time it is not a play on words. All the towns on the island were preparing for their big festival & parade coming in a few days.

OTOH, the island is nick-named ILHA VERDE (green island) for good reason -- there's a good amount of rain to keep all the vegetation green all year round.

"From Farm to Fork" -- directly marketing to their potential customers on the city street is easier than waiting for them to drive the backroads to find you.

I would have liked to bring a bottle or two home but you cannot carry liquids aboard an airplane. And my luggage is not big & sturdy enough to safely hold bottles without breaking them. I have seen the handlers stepping onto baggage.

Currently it is a quite evening and night.
Later that will change as this week various bands and dancers roamed the city streets & squares. And after that, there is a bar or club located in the upper floor and you get to listen to their music.

Blooming Bushes line nearly all country roads

For this, I don't know the reason but nearly everywhere I drove, the side of the roads were full of these colorful blooming bushes. Typically white and some in blue.
In some areas, you have alleys or alamedas with tall trees covering the top of the road and again bushes and wall lining the side.

It had been a bumpy "red-eye" flight over the Atlantic and around a storm.

The sunset & moonrise on the evening BEFORE the full moon.
This beautiful scene made me come back the next evening -- not knowing I was about to see the partial lunar eclipse.

Living in a valley means, you only get to see the sun or moon after it climbed high enough to peek over the 3000...4500ft tall hills. Only when traveling, do I get to see the actual sun- or moonrise (or setting sun & moon).

This was a particularly beautiful occasion and location with nice sailboats, distant clouds and a perfect pink sky.
