Vizcaya Bridge - 27 September 2014

Vizcaya Bridge is the oldest hanging transporter bridge in the world. It was built in 1893 and designed by Alberto de Palacio, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel. It links the towns of Portugalete and Las Arenas (part of Getxo) near Bilbao, crossing the mouth of the River Nervión.

'Puppy' (1992) by Jeff Koons, stainless steel, soil, and flowering plants.

One could hardly imagine a work more different to 'Tulips' (also by Jeff Koons). Both are at the Guggenheim, Bilbao. 'Puppy' is an unusual work which, consisting in part of flowering plants, changes in appearance with the season.

Architectural detail of Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao.

When the Museum opened in 1997, it brought new prominence to Bilbao. It is certainly worth travelling to see the architecture although a longer debate could be had about most of the art. However, the stern critic might find the building, especially the exterior, needlessly elaborate. I applaud innovation in architecture but have reservations when form goes well beyond any conceivable function.

The Basque Region has its own police force (Udaltzaingoa). This Ford C-Max was seen in the Arenal (Basque: Areatza) area of Old Town Bilbao and is the same vehicle as in my earlier picture.

Probably my favourite sight in Bilbao was the magnificent remains of Estación Bilbao La Naja. We received an explanation that just one route now departs from here, the main station being at nearby Abanda, but I am not sure that any trains now run from La Naja.
