The pen was quietly staying with the 4 cygnets, while the cob was unfurling his wings and angrily moving towards a large dog that was attempting to retrieve a ball. The dog backed off, but eventually retrieved the ball when the swan family moved away.

The large black fleshy lump at the base of the bill is much larger and more pronounced on the cob, this can be called the "berry".

These relatively small birds usually forage for food by turning small stones over on the beach. I have never seen them before, perched like this. There was a couple of folks standing nearby who told me that someone had been feeding them on this rocky wall, for what reason I don't know. There's plenty of suitable food for them on a beach at low tide.

There are only seven ducklings in this photo, but the PiP shows the female merganser with her nine ducklings. The group were quite far away in the river and swimming rapidly, the light wasn't very good, so consequently the photos aren't as sharp as I would like.

We saw a pair of merganser here on the Severn earlier in the year, but this is the first time we have seen ducklings.

I think this is a late clutch of ducklings as most other ducklings that we have seen this year are now almost fully grown. She had 4 ducklings and I managed to get all four of them in shot in the PiP, but they are so quick moving, and the second photo was taken against the sun, so I had to lighten it, consequently the colour is no longer true.

The second PiP shows that white ducks can have yellow ducklings which are absolutely adorable.
