This photo was taken last weekend, during a visit south of Calgary to the wonderful homestead near Nanton, belonging to Jim Coutts. He is gradually returning his land to it's original prairie grassland, but he has stunning gardens surrounding his home. Poppies add brilliant red and orange to these areas and I was happy to take endless photos, so that I could enjoy the colours any time I want.

It is the size of a popcan and is rare to uncommon year-round in Alberta. It was perched in a tree with a million small branches (of course!), so no uncluttered photos. Three of us witnessed something that I hadn't seen before - twice when a Chickadee was heard nearby, the owl compressed its round, fluffy body and it became long and slender and nowhere near as cute. Facial details also changed completely, as can be seen in my next photo. White eyebrows appeared and even small ear-tufts.

We were also very lucky to see an American Three-toed Woodpecker in the same park.

Of course, it could be a female, who knows? We saw about three of these little Wood Frogs in Cremona Bog yesterday, all of them very dark, so presumably they are Dark Phase/Dark Morph species? This little one allowed one of us (not me!) to hold him so that a few photos could be taken. I'd never seen a Dark Morph before - didn't even know there was such a thing. I'll try to remember to post a side shot of him eventually, to show the dark colour on his back. Wood Frogs are only 30 to 60 millimetres (about one to two inches) in length. Thanks, little guy, for helping us learn new things : )
"Coloration varies from pink-tan, gray, olive-green, various shades of brown, to almost black; whitish jaw stripe contrasts with a dark eye mask that extends from the nostril over the eye and just behind the ear; light dorsal stripe is frequently present" From fanweb.ca/resources-services/alberta-natural-history/amph...

Today was the third day in a row of all-day botanizing out of town (four all together this week). In other words, three long days of slow hiking, finding and recording every single plant, bird, insect, animal that we find. This means setting my alarms for 5:00 a.m. or 5:30 a.m., and getting home somewhere around maybe 6:00 p.m.. So much fresh air and exercise, plus constantly getting down on my knees to photograph something totally knocks me out - even more so, if it happens to be a hot day. Today was very pleasant, not too hot, thank goodness. It was spent on Plateau Mountain, south of the city and south of Highway 40, turning south when you reach Highwood House. A long drive to get there, but what a magnificent place. Tons of beautiful wildflowers on the grassy slopes.

The following link goes to a short, fascinating video on YouTube, about how Wood Frogs freeze solid in the winter.
Actually, it has been a beautiful, sunny day, around 0C or a degree or two above. Was out on a walk all morning at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary, which is where I noticed this leaf lying on the path. I can never see a leaf edged with ice-crystals and not photograph it. Straight after this walk, I called in at the Zoo, which was nearby. SO many people everywhere, enjoying the sunshine!! I couldn't get all that many photos - think I prefer a weekday, not a weekend. The most-photographed creature there for me was a Canada Goose, who was standing on the path, on guard, while his mate was up on a low roof, building her nest : ) One very happy animal was the new, male Snow Leopard. He and the female have just been introduced - and today he must have been feeling VERY happy (to the embarassment of many parents with young children, LOL). Hopefully, there will be babies this year.

"Datura stramonium is also known by the common names jimson weed, ditch weed, stink weed, loco weed, Korean morning glory, Jamestown weed, thorn apple, angel's trumpet, devil's trumpet, devil's snare, devil's seed, mad hatter, crazy tea, malpitte, and "poor man's acid". It is a common weed in the Nightshade Family. It contains tropane alkaloids that are sometimes used as a hallucinogen. The active ingredients are atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine which are classified as deliriants, or anticholinergics. Due to the elevated risk of overdose in uninformed users, many hospitalizations, and some deaths, are reported from recreational use." From Wikipedia.
