A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".

"Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium" was knit into the network of Roman roads. An important one run straight south via Bonna (= Bonn), Rigomagus (=Remagen), Antunnacum (=Andernach), Confluentes (= Koblenz), etc. This was the shortest road to Italy.

The layout of this road can still be seen in Cologne. It starts near the cathedral and runs via Hohe Strasse, Severin Strasse, Bonner Strasse.

While "Hohe Strasse" is the main shopping area, "Severin Strasse "and "Bonner Strasse" are in the vibrant "Südstadt", where many bars, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs are located. Here are three restaurants, that by now can only sell "take away" food. "485 GRAD" offers pizza, "Einburgerung" offers burgers and (my preferred) "Vina Asia Express" offers Asian dishes (PiPs).

The French did not like it, but allowed carnival in 1804, from then on, carneval societies were founded often making fun of (French and later Prussian) militarism.

The "fifth season" (carnival season) is declared open at 11 minutes past 11 on the 11th of the 11th month November. That is the time of balls and sessions. The carneval hits the streets on Fat Thursday (Weiberfastnacht) with a declaration at the Alter Markt square at 11.11h. on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent.

Shops are closed, pubs are open, Cologne folks are masqueraded, sing, dink and dance. For somebody not born here - it feels a bit strange.

A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".
Once a well known haberdashery, that as well offered linen and wool, now here is a High-End HiFi store.
</media:text>
Chlodwig Platz, a large roundabout, is the center of the vibrant Suedstadt quarter. Where the tramstop is (left) is the Ubierring, the Bonner Strasse is to the very right.
In front are two restaurants/ cafes/ bars. The "4711"-signs are the last traces of a perfumery, that once existed, where now is "Meister Gerhard", serving nice lunches. "Cafe Kult" (behind the red chairs) is the perfect place to sip a white wine and watch the sunset in summer.
