Oceania Insignia stayed overnight at Bordeaux 28/29 September 2014. She arrived from Bilbao and departed to Concarneau, stopping at Le Verdon at the mouth of the Gironde to collect passengers who had been on tours.

My night shots remain a bit hit and miss but the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas deserved an attempt on a late night walk facilitated by the stay overnight in Bordeaux of Oceania Insignia.

There is a story behind this photograph told in pictures I did not take and others I chose not to post. On the Miroir d'eau [qv], a couple, probably genuine ballet dancers, performed balletic moves for a photographer. As the fog rose from the Miroir d'eau, the photographs would have been wonderful but to take them would have been an intrusion. This figure caught my eye - the seat is part of the space - and it became clear that she was associated with the photoshoot. The shoot over, the dancers came here to change and, again, the pictures would have been a little too intrusive. So what survives the moral edit is this image of a rather regal figure surveying, both severely and protectively, her charges on the water.

A public space on a grand scale in Bordeaux. The granite slabs of the Miroir d'eau and an unexplained image - perhaps from the 2014 Agora Biennale - form the foreground to this wide view of the Place de la Bourse.

The Miroir d'eau (Water Mirror) in Bordeaux is the world's largest reflecting pool. Covered in 2cm of water, in summer it creates a fog every 15 minutes. This is a source of fascination and amusement to both locals and visitors. One woman apparently found it a sensory experience. A short distance away, a couple struck ballet poses for a photographer in the rising, swirling fog. The pictures, I imagine, were remarkable.

Bordeaux is a fairly spectacular cruise destination as a voyage on the Gironde and then the Garonne finishes right in the city berthed within walking distance of many sights and attractions. The ships are a source of considerable local interest. Oceania Insignia had arrived from Bilbao and would depart for Concarneau via a pick-up at Le Verdon (at the mouth of the Gironde).

The buildings closest to the Garonne river in Bordeaux are imposing and classical in style. The Bourse Maritime on Place Lainé is an example but was constructed only between 1921 and 1925.
