There was only one small area that had the sort of "honky tonk" feeling dating back to what the area was like in the 70's. It was almost too 'authentic', including a small bunch of young men with heavy Italian accents standing on the other side of the road here, swearing about 'faggots'.

Like much of urban America, we seem to have lost something in the gentrifying of everything. In the 70's Revere Beach was a fairly rundown area that felt somewhat unsafe, but also erotic. While its much safer now, it seems to have lost its uniqueness.

I lived in various parts of the Boston area from 1976 to about 1982 -- I was in Medford for the heaviest snow storm I ever saw (in 1978).

Fort Hill had been a fairly densely populated area at one point, but many of the houses had burned. When I was in Boston in the 70's, a number of my friends lived in a commune of gay men that had two of the remaining houses on the hill -- the commune was called "The Fort Hill Faggots."

Fort Hill again seemed to be fairly densely populated when I visited in 2007, with a combination of relatively newer apartments, public housing, and reconstructed older mansions.

Jerry's (see adjacent) house in Parker Hill. When he lived there in the 70's, this was a fairly rough and decaying area with vacant factories, poorly-maintained housing projects, the remains of burnt down houses, and high crime. The neighborhood, though, had almost a rural feeling due to the amount of brush and trees covering the shells of houses and factories. Jerry was very nonchalant about the roughness of the neighborhood, in some ways operating in his own world and ignoring what was around. That he had in his living room an antique harpsichord and a grand piano, both of which he played, contributed to the sense of his being somewhat other-worldly. Adding to the sense of unconventional, however, was the fact that he and his wife (who was a lesbian and lived elsewhere) had two teenage children which were also often at the house.

Further west is the Massachusetts Avenue bridge (dark, in the lower right of the picture), the famous Citgo sign in Kenmore Square, and on the far left, the cranes that were visible in another picture as part of construction in the Fenway.
