The river is at a very low point and has been for some time now. Luckily the low level seems to be stable, and is kept that way by tributaries from North Wales.

This view can be idyllic, but when the river levels are high then the area gets flooded. The bridge, the English Bridge, is one of many bridges across the Severn in Shrewsbury, and is one of the main two, the orher being the Welsh Bridge. The others are mostly foot bridges, althouh there is a rail bridge too.

May 2023 bring peace to you all. The Severn has reached the flood point when the gates along the path are locked. It rained heavily this morning, but tomorrow it should be dry and sunny. The flooding depends on what is happening upstream in Wales, and the homes and businesses here are starting to get nervous.

When I took this photo looking up river from the Queen's bridge to the Auld Brig, I didn't notice the lamp post in the way. It's funny what the brain ignores isn't it?

The spire belongs to St.Matthew's church. The building was completed in 1871, and is now a category B listed building. The bridges cross the River Tay, which is the longest river in Scotland and the seventh-longest in Great Britain, and which eventually reaches the sea in Dundee.

This is the first time that we have ventured into Shrewsbury since mid December, and what a joy it was to walk along the riverside and have a nice cup of coffee outside in a proper cup! We didn't go near any shops ( I hate shopping) and everyone seemed to be aware of social distancing, so we felt quite safe. My second jab is on Sunday, but we remain wary of crowds, and cannot understand those folks who gather in great numbers in city centres, claiming that at last they can get some fresh air. Where have they been? Most people have been able to get out and about.

Devorgilla Bridge Over the River Nith in Dumfries

The Devorgilla bridge (named after Devorgilla, Lady of Galloway the mother of King John Balliol of Scotland) was originally a stone built bridge built around 1430. The bridge was badly damaged by a flood around 1620 and was extensivly repaired or rebuilt shortly after as a nine arch sandstone bridge spanning over 200 feet, the brige was further modified in 1794 because of reclamation work on the east bank of the river three arches were removed leaving the bridge in its current 6 arch form.

The Caul is an old weir which crosses the River Nith at Dumfries and once diverted water to Dumfries Mill on the western bank (now the Robert Burns Centre). It was constructed c.1705 and, following concern from landowners that salmon would not be able to move upstream, features fish ladders at either end. B-listed in 1987, The Caul provides an impressive sight when the river is in spate.

We didn't walk far enough away from the bridge to get all six arches in the frame unfortunately. Our visit was a whistle stop on the way to Annan.

Underneath The River Tay Road Bridge

The Tay Road Bridge crosses the Firth of Tay, linking Newport in NE Fife with the City of Dundee. At 2250m (1.4 miles) in length, this was the longest road bridge in the UK when it was opened on 18th August 1966 by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother (1900 - 2002). It carries the A92 Trunk Road into the heart of Dundee, replacing a ferry service affectionately known as the Fifies. The bridge consists of 42 spans with a navigation channel located closer to the Fife side. During the construction of the bridge, 140,000 tons of concrete, 4,600 tons of mild steel and 8,150 tons of structural steel was used. The bridge has a gradient of 1:81 running from 9.75 m (32.0 ft) above sea-level in Dundee to 38.1 m (125.0 ft) above sea-level in Fife.

The bridge took 3½ years to build at a cost of approximately £6 million.

When I was a child living in St.Andrews (Fife) in the 1940s and early 50s, we used to travel by bus to Newport and then cross on the ferry into Dundee, either to visit relatives or to attend the dental hospital there. The biggest excitement was when the paddle steamer was working and my Dad used to take me into the engine room to watch the massive pistons working the ferry. Three vessels operated the service, namely the B. L. Nairn (a paddle steamer built in 1929); the Abercraig and the Scotscraig (diesel powered, fitted with Voith Schneider propellers and built in the Caledon Shipyard in Dundee). The paddle steamer was only used when the other ferries needed maintenance.

When the road bridge was opened the paddle steamer was scrapped while the Scotscraig and Abercraig ended their days in Malta.

The road bridge is convenient but the magic is lost.

These days we still visit Dundee as one of my granddaughters is now working as a dentist there, having studied at the aforementioned Dental hospital.
