Tropical - cultivar of Tillandsia ionantha?

I haven't yet been able to find the ID of this tropical plant. This photo was taken on 8 September 2015. In the morning, I joined a group of friends for a three-hour stroll at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. 38 bird species were seen, though I didn't manage to see any of the tiny, fast-moving Warblers. It was good to see 28 Wood Ducks, but they were far, far away, in an area that is still closed due to devastating flood damage. The Sanctuary had been closed for about two years for this reason and only re-opened just a part of the area last year. Later: I believe this bromeliad is a cultivar of Tillandsia ionantha.

The Calgary Zoo is very close to the Sanctuary, so after our morning walk, I decided to call in there. I hadn't been for about a year and I really missed going there. Of course, many of the garden flowers were past their prime, but I did find a few that were fit to photograph. The tropical plant in this photo was growing in the Conservatory.

I knew I wouldn't be able to walk far, having already been walking all morning, but I really wanted to get to the ENMAX Conservatory to see what was going on. I had been longing all summer to see the tropical butterflies and plants. The parking lot that I have always used closed for the winter shirtly after my visit and I don't like the drive back home from the north parking area, using Deerfoot Trail, so tend not to go to the Zoo all winter. Apparently, the bridge that I always use to cross the river is going to be replaced (?) so I don't know when construction will be completed or when I will be able to get to the Zoo again.

There was so much activity going on at the Zoo on this visit. People everywhere, carrying large animals wrapped in white, protective coverings, preparing for the upcoming ILLUMINASIA, Lantern & Garden Festival. Each animal was an individual lantern and there were so many of them. I noticed that several of the real animals in their enclosures were watching all the unaccustomed activity, which made me smile.

A good day, with plenty of photo opportunities, despite the overcast sky. I had been finding far fewer things to photograph, with fall on its way, so a day like this was more than welcome.

I was fascinated by this Billbergia plant in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo when it was recently in bud - don't think I got round to uploading a photo, though. When I went to the Zoo yesterday, I was amazed to see that this bud had opened. What a beautiful sight! Thanks to Nuytsia@Tas for the ID! Much appreciated! I believe this tropical plant is Tillandsia, Pink Quill, a Bromeliad. Photographed in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo on October 11th. Usually when I see these, they are half hidden behind other tropical leaves, so I was lucky to get a clear shot this time.

I always love to see these brilliant red Bromeliads at the Zoo. Love the way the centre fills with water and little purple buds (?) form.

My alarm went off at 5:40 a.m. this morning and I have been out almost all day today, doing a nature exploration of the wooded areas of the grounds of a Golf Course outside the city, recording everything seen (birds, plants, lichens, insects, etc.). It got up to 18C today, but thankfully our walk was very slow-paced. I know I, for one, need to gradually build up to tougher walks and hikes after the last seven sedentary months, LOL.

I'm pretty sure I wrote down the name of this beautiful Tropical plant when I was at the Enmax Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. However, it is on one of the hundreds of tiny pieces of paper that surround my computer, never to be seen again, LOL. Couldn't find an ID after a quick search on Google. I scribbled down the name of this plant, growing in the new Enmax Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, but when I got home and Googled it, there was nothing, LOL. I just liked the tiny spines and the sharp, pink, point.

I liked the strong contrast between the red and green of this plant. Don't know what it is yet. Growing in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. I suspect I'm becoming addicted to this place, LOL! Of course, my camera lens fogs up the moment I step inside the hot building after coming in from the cold air outside, but the Zoo is an amazing place for having a few thoroughly enjoyable hours plus getting a fair bit of much-needed exercise!

Finally, a photo of this pretty Tropical flower fit to post! It has proven to be a difficult flower to get in focus, but this one will do : ). Seen today in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. Hope you had good luck with this one today, Nancy! I have seen similar looking flowers identified as Pink Quill or Purple Quill, so this is a tentative ID.
