As police process the crime scene, bullet holes are visible in the apartment door. The big hole above the apartment number is where a gas grenade went in -- hence the exhaust fan.

It was a stormy Friday night. A spectator at a highschool football game saw a small airplane, illuminated by a flash of lightning. It was low and was headed straight down. Firefighters searched through the night, but it was not until after sunrise that the wreckage was found, in a marshy area near Florida's famous Inverrary golf course. The police wanted news people kept away. Firemen loaned me boots and a fireman's bunker coat. Into the swamp we trudged.

As firemen and police looked on helplessly, the truck's gas tank ruptured, engulfing the man in flames. Afterwards, all that was identifiable were the few charred dollar bills that had been in the driver's billfold.

A driver in a small car cut off this tractor-trailer, full of supplies for the Mister Donut chain. The truck's driver swerved to avoid the car, but his truck skidded and fell over, pinning him inside. Then a fire broke out in the trailer.

One of the most colorful politicians in a state famous for such, John Lomelo Jr. was mayor of the City of Sunrise, Florida, from its establishment as a city no longer owned by its developer to his conviction for having shaken down developers. A personable fellow fond of singing "My Way" in local watering holes, he floated a revenue bond issue to build a theater in the (ultimately successful) hope that Frank Sintra would perform in Lomelo's town. Lomelo had a door disguised as a bookcase in his office, but he did not have a huge bump on his noggin. That was an item on the shelf behind him, and it went unnoticed until the picture appeared in the newspaper.
