The monks walk barefoot.

They walk in the grey morning when the dirt is cool, carrying their lacquered bowls through the dust. The Buddha did not wear shoes, and they do not wear them now. It is a simple matter of humility, a radical shedding of the self. To feel the earth beneath the feet is to know it, turning a simple journey into a meditation on mindfulness and transient grace.

Then the British came with their heavy leather boots. They walked into the temples and refused to take them off, treating the native custom as servile. It sparked the fierce "Shoe Question," a quiet war for dignity led by monks who protected their shrines from imperial desecration. The British kept their boots, but they lost the country.

Now the monks still walk the roads without shoes. The skin on their soles is thick and hard, yet they press directly against the soil, leaving no barrier between the spirit and the earth.

The Mireuk Daebul at Bongeunsa — a 23 m stone Maitreya, the tallest stone statue in Korea, carved under Master Yeongam from 1986 to 1996 with donations from over 10,000 temple members and dedicated to Korean reunification. The temple itself dates to 794 and was the head temple of Korean Seon Buddhism from 1551 to 1936 — now sitting a few hundred metres from the COEX mall in Gangnam.

The "hat" is a stone canopy, descended from the honorific parasol held over rulers and holy figures — and it also keeps rain off the face.

Wat Chedi Luang is a historic Buddhist temple located in the heart of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Built in the late 14th century by King Saen Muang Ma as a royal stupa to house his father’s ashes, the temple was finally completed in the mid-15th century under King Tilokaraj. The immense chedi (pagoda) once stood 82m high, making it the tallest structure in the ancient Lanna Kingdom. Although partially ruined by an earthquake in 1545, the chedi remains an iconic landmark and testament to Chiang Mai's rich cultural heritage. The temple also housed the revered Emerald Buddha for nearly a century before it was relocated to Bangkok.

The main hall features a triple-tiered roof and detailed woodwork, highlighted by a gilded, glass-inlaid facade and flanked by Naga serpent statues at the entrance.

The Leshan Giant Buddha was built during the Tang Dynasty (618–907AD). It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Minjiang, Dadu and Qingyi rivers in the southern part of Sichuan province in China, near the city of Leshan. The stone sculpture faces Mount Emei, with the rivers flowing below his feet. It is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world and it is by far the tallest pre-modern statue in the world.

The Leshan Giant Buddha isn’t just a statue—it’s a marvel of faith, legend, and ancient engineering. Carved over 1,200 years ago from a cliff where three powerful rivers meet, this 71-metre-tall Buddha gazes serenely across the water toward sacred Mount Emei. Legend says the statue was built to calm treacherous currents that claimed countless ships, and remarkably, the stone removed during construction actually changed the river’s flow, making it safer for travellers.

The story behind the Buddha is as dramatic as its size. The monk Haitong, who initiated the project, was so devoted that he reportedly gouged out his own eyes to keep corrupt officials from stealing the funds. The construction spanned 90 years and three generations, and the statue’s hidden drainage system—ingeniously carved into its hair and robes—has helped preserve it through centuries of storms and floods.

Stand at its feet and you’ll feel dwarfed by its sheer scale—each ear is 7 meters long, and a person could sit comfortably on a single toenail. Today, the Leshan Giant Buddha stands as the world’s largest stone Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inviting awe and wonder from all who visit.
