The Pontécoulant family settled here from the 14th century and died out in 1896. They left the castle to the Département Calvados, which converted it into a museum from 1908. Built in the 16th century on the site of a feudal mound castle, the château was extended and remodelled in the 18th century. It is still furnished with the original furniture of the Pontécoulant family.
Perched on a rocky spur (you see it well on the PiP), this castle from the 10th-13th centuries, with a fortified enclosure nearly 2 km long, bears witness to the power of the Dukes of Normandy; it is both a stronghold and a symbol of princely power and the cradle of the Anglo-Norman dynasty.
