Honfleur is especially known for its old, beautiful picturesque harbour (Vieux Bassin), characterized by its houses with slate-covered frontages, painted many times by artists, including in particular Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet forming the "école de Honfleur" (Honfleur school) which contributed to the appearance of the Impressionist movement.

Here are more information on the castle.

"Oyez oyez! Braves gens et gentes dames !" On s'attend presque à une telle annonce sur le banc devant le château... Plus d'information sur le château ici.

"Hört, hört! Tapfere Leute und Edelfrauen !" Fast erwartet man eine solche Ankündigung auf der Bank vor dem Schloss... Mehr Infos über das Schloss hier.

Le temps s'enfuit, comme partout ailleurs, mais ici dans ce château-hôtel peut-être avec plus de distinction ;-) Le Château du Bû est niché dans un écrin de verdure en Suisse Normande.

Time flies, like everywhere else, but here in this castle-hotel perhaps with more elegance;-) The Chateau du Bû is nestled in a green setting in Suisse Normandy.

Die Zeit rennt weg, wie überall, aber hier in diesem Schlosshotel vielleicht mit mehr Vornehmheit;-) Das Schloss von Bû liegt eingebettet in seiner grünen Umgebung in der normannischen Schweiz.

Pontécoulant Castle, with its courtyard of honour and its large park laid out during the reign of Louis XVI, is a jewel of Norman Switzerland. The Pontécoulant family settled here from the 14th century and died out in 1896. They left the castle to the Département Calvados, which converted it into a museum from 1908. Built in the 16th century on the site of a feudal mound castle, the château was extended and remodelled in the 18th century. It is still furnished with the original furniture of the Pontécoulant family.

LONG CHEMIN POUR ALLER AU CHÂTEAU. Le château de Pontécoulant avec sa cour d’honneur et son grand parc créé sous Louis XVI est un joyau de la Suisse Normande. La Famille De Pontécoulant s’y est établie dès le XIVème siècle et s'y est éteinte en 1896, laissant le château au département du Calvados, qui l'aménagea en musée dès 1908. Le Château construit au XVIème siècle à l’emplacement d’une ancienne motte féodale fut agrandi et réaménagé au XVIIIème siècle. Il est toujours meublé avec le mobilier d'origine de la famille de Pontécoulant.

LANGER WEG ZUM SCHLOSS. Das Schloss Pontécoulant mit seinem Ehrenhof und seinem grossen Park, der unter Louis XVI. angelegt wurde, ist ein Juwel der Normannischen Schweiz. Die Familie von Pontécoulant liess sich hier ab dem 14. Jh. nieder und starb 1896 aus. Sie überliess das Schloss dem Département Calvados, das es ab 1908 als Museum umbaute. Das im 16. Jh. an der Stelle einer feudalen Erdhügelburg errichtete Schloss wurde im 18. Jh. erweitert und umgestaltet. Es ist noch immer mit dem ursprünglichen Mobiliar der Familie de Pontécoulant eingerichtet.

L'église Saint-Pierre-de-Feuguerolles, au milieu du cimetière entouré d’un enclos, appartient au roman de transition. Elle date du XIIe siècle puis elle a subi des changements jusqu'au XVIIe siècle. La tour-clocher est équipée de hautes contreforts angulaires sur chacune de ses arêtes.

FORTIFIED! The church of Saint-Peter, which stands in the middle of the walled cemetery, belongs to the transitional Romanesque period. It dates from the 12th century and underwent changes until the 17th century. The bell tower is equipped with high angular buttresses at each corner.

BEFESTIGT ! Die Kirche Saint-Peter, die inmitten des von einer Mauer umgebenen Friedhofs steht, gehört zur Übergangsromanik. Sie stammt aus dem 12. Jh. und wurde bis ins 17. Jh. hinein verändert. Der Glockenturm ist an jeder Ecke mit hohen Winkelstrebepfeilern ausgestattet.

This is where the future Conqueror was born and was one of his main residences. Perched on a rocky spur (you see it well on the PiP), this castle from the 10th-13th centuries, with a fortified enclosure nearly 2 km long, bears witness to the power of the Dukes of Normandy; it is both a stronghold and a symbol of princely power and the cradle of the Anglo-Norman dynasty.

CIEL MENAÇANT AU-DESSUS DU CHÂTEAU DE GUILLAUME-LE-CONQUERANT. C'est ici où naquit le futur Conquérant et qui fut l'une de ses résidences principales. Perché sur un éperon rocheux (on le voit bien sur le PiP), ce château des Xe -XIIIe siècles, avec une enceinte fortifiée de près de 2 km de long, témoigne de la puissance des ducs de Normandie; c'est à la fois place forte et symbole du pouvoir princier et berceau de la dynastie anglo-normande.

BEDROHLICHER HIMMEL ÜBER DER BURG VON WILHELM DEM EROBERER. Hier wurde der spätere Eroberer geboren, und hier befand sich einer seiner Hauptwohnsitze. Die auf einem Felsvorsprung gelegene Burg aus dem 10.-13. Jh. (man sieht es gut auf dem PiP) mit einer fast 2 km langen Festungsanlage zeugt von der Macht der Herzöge der Normandie; es ist gleichzeitig Festung und Symbol der fürstlichen Macht und Wiege der anglo-normannischen Dynastie.

Built around 1123 by Henry I Beauclerc, Duke of Normandy and King of England (son of William de Conqueror), its construction made Vire one of the most significant strongholds in Normandy. The castle was slighted by order of Richelieu in 1630.

The ruins of the quadrangular tower are still impressive. The western facade is notable for its powerful flat buttresses, windows and fireplaces visible over three stories with traces of defensive structures.

Belle cité dans le Calvados, connue pour son "andouille de Vire". J'ai aimé cette vue sur Notre-Dame (13° siècle).

On the foundations of a Romanesque chapel built around 1150, a new church in primitive Gothic style is edified around 1230 and dedicated to Our Lady in 1272. It is enlarged in different styles until the 16th c., with the rise of the flamboyant Gothic choir. It was destroyed after the bombings of June 1944, and restored from 1948.

La "Tour aux Raines" faisait partie des remparts de la ville construits sur ordre de Saint Louis à partir de 1250. Elle doit son nom aux grenouilles qui coassaient sur les bords du fleuve Vire tout proche.

The "Frog Tower" was part of the ramparts of the city built by order of Saint Louis from 1250. It owes its name to the frogs that croaked on the banks of the river Vire nearby.

February: it's not in the Caribbean, it's in Normandy!!

Amateur de cafés typiquement atypiques, en voici un, ouvert depuis 1928. Si on ne s'y fait plus couper les cheveux (la maison a conservé son activité de café-coiffeur-barbier jusqu'en 1972), le lieu n'en demeure pas moins unique et attachant.

Lovers of typical atypical coffeeshops, here is one, opened since 1928. No hair is cut any more there (the house kept his activity of coffee- and barbershop until 1972), but the place remains no less unique and endearing.
