Originally to be known as Class 87/2, the 5000hp Class 90s were built by BREL at Crewe between 1987-1990 to replace the 1960s built Class 81-85. Here we see Virgin 90002 'The Girls Brigade' at Stockport, with a service from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly.

With the sectorisation of the railways in the 1990s, 26 of the 50 Class 90s were transferred to the Railfreight Sector, and reclassified as Class 90/1. A number of them were later reclassified to 90/2, but soon reverted back. A rather scruffy 90140, in Railfreight Distribution colours, sits at Crewe.

Virtually ignored by the majority for most of their working lives, it's only in the twilight of their careers that the 86s are gaining the recognition they deserve. 86632 is paired up with 90041, seen here at Carlisle with 4M74 Coatbridge to Basford Hall.
